Waukee is a small town in Iowa, United States. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wapello County suburb of Cedar Rapids. The land that would become Waukee was first settled by Germans in 1836. They named their community "Wahle" which means "hollow." In 1841, J.P. Greer purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land from the tribe of Sac and Hennepin for $5 per acre ($ in current dollars). This left an opening for farming on the site and soon potatoes were being grown there as well as corn and other crops. In 1851, George Ransom founded the first store in what would become Waukee with his brother John Ransom. The two brothers continued to operate the store until it closed in 1903. A post office was established at Wahle in 1857, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1906 due toLLoyd Lincoln's death when he was mayor of Cedar Rapids; however, a notice announcing its closure still hangs today on the building’s facade! In 1907, railroad construction began through Wapello County and business started moving into what became Wahle from surrounding towns such as Alcornville-West Carbon and Muscatine-Lawn Hill. By 1912, Wahle had three stores with a total population of 147 people! The townspeople decided to build their own schoolhouse after hearing about one built near Amesbury, Massachusetts! The first teacher taught students from kindergarten through 8th grade in 1913 before moving up to 12th grade that year; however, because there wasn't enough money available to buy new furniture or renovations necessary for this type of school system back then (!), students were required to wear rags over their clothes when they entered class! Accordingly named “Ransom School” #1 opened its doors on October 15th 1916 after several years fundraising efforts by Mrs. Cramer! Classes met each day except Tuesday during term time which were used for agricultural classes (aka farm work) led by Mrs….. In 1925Mrs…… added music instruction!!! And we have been educating children ever since!!!!!

Waukee is a small town in southern Iowa, located on the eastern edge of the state. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. Waukee is part of the Dubuque, IA-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Waukee was French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville on July 8, 1795. He named it "Saint-Jean." On November 7, 1813, Anthony Wayne founded an agricultural colony called Wayne's Landing in what is now Waukee after his father and namesake Anthony Wayne. The village began as a farmstead with only twelve residents in 1814. In 1847, Waukee became a city when it was incorporated as a result of an act by the Iowa General Assembly. It annexed surrounding townships in 1957. During World War II, many Waukee families enlisted in the military and served in various roles including ambulance drivers and combat engineers. Some notable citizens who have served include banker Herb Kapp (1918-2005), Mayor Richard Buckley (1975-2002), POWs Earl Vietzger and Walt Nowak (1945-1987) and David Ladd (1981-2006).
