Waukee is a city in Des Moines County, Iowa, United States. The population was 11,569 at the 2010 census. Waukee is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is included in the Davenport-Moline-East Peoria, IA-IL Combined Statistical Area. The first known person to call this area "Waubeka" was Noah Hawley in 1836. The name Waubeka may have been derived from "wacoka," an American Hennepin word meaning "a kind of cornmeal pudding." Hawley also named a watercourse after Waubeka which ran through his farmstead. A post office called Waubeka was established in 1859, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1905. In 1872, John Custer sold land east of present day Waukee on what became US Highway 508 for $1 million to railroad developers George Stephenson and James J. Hillyer. The route would later be renamed Union Pacific Railroad's Dubuque Division Line when the line was extended into Iowa Territory. Railway construction started soon after and by 1880, all but one mile of the route had been built when Congress passed the Homestead Act that gave Americans purchase rights to land near inland waterways and railways. By 1886, four miles of this line had also been built when Iowa State University opened its new campus on what is now North Water Street within walking distance of Waukee's downtown blocks (the originalsite of UI). In 1888, Waukee itself became a town; however, it only lasted for two years before becoming again a city with annexations from other towns throughout central Iowa during 1890-1901 due to lack of population growth or development within their respective boundaries - thus making Waubeka formally a city once again throughout most if not all periods between 1888 & 1901 despite having no official designation as such by either government entity whatsoever! In 1903 following annexation by Cedar Rapids via an act of the state legislature,[6] Cedar RapidsTechnological College opened its doors adjacent to then Waukee Municipal Stadium – giving rise to what is today Illinois Institute Of Technology just across South Road from where Central Avenue crosses Interstate 80 (now I-80/Old Route 4) eastbound just south of Cedar Rapids Boulevard; which made good use both stadiums over ensuing decades hosting various sports events including lacrosse (Cedar Rapids Panthers), baseball (Iowa Cubs), soccer (Iowa Swarm FC), basketball (Hawkeye boys varsity team), track & field (IAHS varsity girls triple jump champions 1981), fencing (ISU Men’s fencing champion) among many others! After more than eighty years as home to UI students some 2 ½ miles away at Central Avenue & I-80 interchange while also hosting various businesses including local car dealership LaCroix Tire Company[7]& subsequent housing developments such as FirstMerit Bank Center[8][9], former nearby KFC restaurantviolence against women has decreased significantly since 1990s update

In 1916, Waukee incorporated as a city and quickly became one of Des Moines' leading cities. Today, Waukee is home to several large businesses and colleges – including Drake university – as well as a number of smaller establishments such as a library and grocery store.
