Toward the end of the 1800s, Iowa’s national guard was a vital part of the state’s defense. The Guard was created in 1867 to provide soldiers and civilians with necessary equipment and training for the militia-style defense that would become common in America during this time. The Guard played an important role in keeping peace in rural Iowa for many years, and eventually became an all-volunteer force. During World War I, the National Guard fought on both sides of the conflict. The National Guard of Waterloo, Iowa was organized on December 12, 1875. The first national guard unit in the state was Company G of the First Iowa Infantry Regiment which was quartered at Rock Island Arsenal. The first active duty assignment for the National Guard in Waterloo was providing security for a state fair held in town on October 9, 1876. In 1880, the regiment was reorganized as Company A and served with distinction during the American Civil War. After the war, company A disbanded but its members were re-routed to other units of the National Guard. In 1921, another company H of the 1st Iowa Infantry Regiment (now known as Company I) arrived from Des Moines and joined forces with local companies C and E to form a battalion-sized unit under command of Captain John Fenton. This battalion served throughout World War II before disbanding in 1945. On November 15, 1949, elements of Company K (First Iowa Infantry) reactivated at Rock Island Arsenal after being pulled out of service due to budgetary cuts caused by World War II hostilities. The unit remained active until it disbanded on February 14, 1951 when all remaining elements left for Illinois without giving notice to their counterparts in Waterloo who had been mobilized 2 days earlier that day for mobilization purposes only.
Waterloo, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. Waterloo is located on the Missouri River, about south of Des Moines.
Waterloo was founded by white farmers in 1847 as Waterloo County, Illinois Territory. The first post office opened in 1840 and it was called "New Watertown." A new town named Waterloo was platted in 1847 and became the county seat of Waterloo County. In 1878, the towns of Genoa and Northfield were established within Waterloo County and became independent cities; Genoa retained its name while Northfield changed to Cedar Rapids.
The city's website says that "the story of [waterloo] begins with Pierre LaFontaine who arrived here in 1847 from Canada." In fact, Pierre LaFontaine (1789-1855) was not actually from Waterloo but rather from Ottawa Township, Upper Canada (now Ontario). He built what is now known as Old Fort Dearborn on an ancient Sioux Indian hunting ground near present day Centerville for Canadian fur traders during the 1830s and 1840s when transportation methods were far different than they are today. He also helped found what is now Winona Lake Park in 1846-48 after he noticed that there wasn't anything close to a park like that existing on the banks of the Missouri River east of Chicago.
Pierre's grandson François LaFontaine (1819-1892) took over running la Fontaine land holdings hereabouts beginning in 1865 which led to further development including professional farming techniques being introduced into this area which would soon lead to dairy production becoming an important industry hereabouts.
