Waterloo is a town in Douglas County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. Waterloo is part of the Waterloo-Moline-Iowa City, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Cedar Rapids to the south and east, Dubuque to the north and west, and Clinton to the northwest. The first settler in Waterloo was Abram Pogue in 1836. The name of the town was changed from Pogue to Waterloo on July 1, 1853. The new name comes from General John Porter's victory over Native Americans at Battle of Black Hawk in 1847. In 1860, many residents of Waterloo voted to secede from Missouri as a result ofthe American Civil War. On November 3rd of that year they ratified a resolution stating that "No person or persons accessory thereto shall hereafter reside within this Township." However most residents chose not to leave and remain within their own community which continued until May 10th 1870 when it merged with Dubuque into one town. Waterloo has had several moments during its history when it has been known as an important center for trade or industry: In 1865, Butterfield & Company started trading post in downtown Waterloo with goods coming all over America via riverboat transportation. In 1901-1902 Armour Manufacturing Co., located across the street from downtown on First Street began making firearms including revolvers and pistols under contract with military forces around the world. Other significant businesses include Wirtz's grocery store (now closed) on Cedar Street which operated until 1951; Jardine Rubber Co.; Hinkle Furniture; Applebee's restaurant; State Bank; and Midwestern Telephone Service before it went out of business in 1984 On Monday January 9th 1920 a fire destroyed much equipment used by Midwestern Telephone Service inside their building on 5th Avenue NE near US 20A between Cedar and US 20B streets during an afternoon thunderstorm that also caused extensive damage to adjacent buildings including main office tower (now called AIG Tower). With customers still using service up through January 10th some efforts were made by local citizens - among them Mayor Harry Gritz - to rebuild services using parts salvaged from other company buildings but no successful conclusion could be reached so full service ceased operations effective February 15th 1920
