Waterloo is a small town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waterloo–Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original name for Waterloo was "Carlisle." Waterloo was laid out by Nicholas Culpepper in 1837 as a post settlement on the Cedar River. In 1847, it became the county seat of Polk County and was named for George Washington Carleton (1763-1843), an American general who served in the Mexican War and as commander of militia forces during the Utah Expedition of 1846. In 1872, it moved from Cedar Rapids to its present location on the Ottawa River. The town's first store opened in 1880. The first school opened in 1886 and remained open until 1944 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1949, the town voted to change its name to Waterloo after General George Armstrong Custer (1815-1876), who had been killed at Battle of Little Big Horn near Fort Lyon while leading an Indian attack on that same year's Dakota Sioux Uprising. He had become known as "the last great Bismarckite," referring to his efforts to modernize North Dakota following its admission into the United States as a state in 1889 under Chief Sitting Bull's leadership. The nearby Cedar Rapids Municipal Airport began serving local residents in 1936 and remains operational today; however, no passenger services are offered currently due to budget cuts by federal Aviation Administration officials; however, there is potential for future development with light-rail service being provided through neighboring Des Moines via a new line extending from downtown Des Moines across Waterloo into Cedar Rapids proper.
