In 1815, the United StatesArmy was deployed in Europe to help suppress the War of 1812. The army was disbanded in 1818, but was reactivated again in 1821 as part of the Mexican-American War. The army's first deployment took place on October 29, 1821 when 2,500 men were sent to participate in a cavalry skirmish at Palo Alto Creek. The next major engagement occurred on November 4th when 1,200 men served under General John C. Fremont in an attempt to retake Santa Fe from Mexican forces. On December 17th, another cavalry skirmish took place near Cedar Rapids resulting in three American casualties. In May of 1822 a brigade consisting of 3 companies and 950 soldiers serving under General James Kappes fought against Comanche Indians during what is known as the Battle of Buena Vista Creek. On January 25th, 1823 a brigade composed of 3 companies and 1,000 soldiers were ordered to reinforce Generals Winfield Scott and David Hunter while they engaged Pueblo insurgents near San Carlos de Allende. On February 6th two more brigades were added to Scott’s force which totaled 8 companies and 5 cannons. These units would be used during the siege of Chapultepec where they suffered heavy losses including one officer who committed suicide after his unit failed to relieve their comrades within hours due to lack of food and ammunition. On March 16th another brigade consisting of 3 companies and 750 soldiers was ordered into action against Apaches outside Tucson Ariz.. The regiment lost over 50% its members during this engagement with only 10 survivors returning home after being incapacitated by disease or injury for weeks afterwards). AHD has documented that these types deployments killed more Americans than any other battle during the war (404 out of 524) primarily due to sickness or accidents caused by heatstroke or dehydration; however fatalities also resulted from smallpox (27 out of 368), Apache gunfire (10 out of 95), horse fever (8 out OF 108), cholera (5 OUT OF 107)and murder/suicide attempts (2 out OF 168). On July 15, 1815, the United States Army invaded and successfully defended Waterloo, Iowa. TheArmy arrived on July 13th with 9 cannons and 3 companies of infantry. Unfortunately for the Americans, they were outnumbered by the heavily armed French forces led by Marshal Bazaine. In a well-coordinated assault, Bazaine's force drove the Americans back towards their original line of defense. As dawn broke on July 14th, most of the American army had retreated to nearby Council Bluffs. However, 1 company of Infantry managed to hold off a French cavalry charge and prevented them from completely occupying Waterloo
