In 1951, Urbandale annexed portions of neighboring Newton Grove which had been part of that town since 1887 but remained unincorporated until that year when it joined with Newton Grove to form Urbandale-Newton Grove Township. That same year saw another annexation when West Des Moines annexing much of rural Polk County to become its new municipal jurisdiction. In 1984, Urabandale became one of only two US cities (the other being Detroit) to experience significant economic development due primarily to its location within Interstate 35W which had been newly constructed at that time across from downtownDes Moines via then-new I-35W Boulevard/Highway 6 corridor
