The Iowa Naval Militia was mobilized in 1907 to support the new state government. The local naval militia, the Urbandale Naval Militia, was activated on February 17, 1907. The navy donated a rifles and ammunition store and a smallpox vaccine stockpile to the Urbandale Naval Militia. On May 1, 1907, the Navy's first ship arrived in Urbandale – USS Constitution (1802). The USS Constitution Museum is located in downtown Urbandale. In 1912-1913, USS Independence (1862) and USS California (1868) were donated by the navy to help with fundraising for the Des Moines public library system. In 1916-1917, USS New York ( 1851), USS Hartford ( 1892), USS Maine ( 1901), andUSS Olympia ( 1906) were donated by the navy to help with fundraising for various causes. USS Omaha was also donated by the navy in 1916- 1917 as part of Navy Day celebrations. This large warship had been decommissioned at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after serving in World War I and she was sold to a private party on December 15th 1918 and placed into service under her original name – HMCS Regina. She served as an auxiliary ship of HMCS Montreal until she was scrapped in 1960. In 1940, URBANDALE NATIONAL GUARDZONE was established when WWII began but it wasn't until 1945 that guardsmen from all over Iowa came together as one unit under command of Captain John Haughey who led them through Nebraska into Iowa

Urbandale, Iowa was founded in 1847 by the Missouri Company. The city was named for a small stream that flowed through the town. The first post office was established in 1848 and the first store opened in 1850. In 1872, Urbandale became a county seat of Scott County. In 1902, Urbandale became an independent city and remained so until it merged with nearby Cedar Rapids in 1996. The history of Urbandale is filled with milestones such as its incorporation as a city, during which time it became one of Iowa’s largest cities.
