The National Guard was first organized in Iowa in 1903. The unit was known as the “Iowa State Militia” and it served as a militia until 1907. In 1907, the National Guard was merged with the Iowa Volunteer Infantry to form the Iowa National Guard. The National Guard remained an infantry regiment until 1959 when it became a cavalry regiment. From 1959-1973, the National Guard was split into two brigades: 1st Brigade and 2nd Brigade. From 1973-1978, 1st Brigade was disbanded and its members were combined with 2nd Brigade to create 3rd Brigade which remains today as one of the brigade commands within the Iowa National Guard. From 1978-1983, 3rd Brigade was disbanded and its members were combined with 4th Brigade to create 5th Brigade which remains today as one of the brigade commands within the Iowa National Guardsman system. As of 2019, 6th Brigade is still inactive while 7th Brigade has been activated for several months but is currently dormant due to lack of funds

Urbandale, Iowa is a town located in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 753 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Area. The first people to live in Urbandale were settlers from Pennsylvania who came in 1836. They built a log cabin on the east side of the river and named it after their home state of Pennsylvania. The first post office was established in 1837 and operated for six years. In 1851, the town was incorporated and named after Urbana, Illinois, which had been founded two years earlier by adventurous young men from that state looking for new opportunities. The early residents were farmers and traders who bought land around Urbandale to settle down and raise crops. By 1860, there were more than 50 families living in Urbandale with a total of 100 acres (39 hectares). A school was started in 1865 and served grades one through eight until 1940 when it became an elementary school known as Independence School District No. 1 . In 1870, a sawmill was built near the town center and began producing lumber for local buildings and furniture until it closed in 1935. In 1925, three brothers-turned-miners named Harry Hafer*, Clarence Hafer*,*and Harold Hafer erected what is now known as the First National Bank Building on Main Street . That same year also saw the opening of Keystone Kops , an ice cream parlor located on Second Street that became one of America's most popular tourist attractions . The store continued operation until 1978 when it closed due to changes in consumer behavior . In 1955, construction began on Interstate 55 which crossed over into Cedar County from Newton Township back then called Osborne Township . This made Urbandale become one of the few towns within Cedar County to have access to quality transportation . By 1970, there were more than 200 businesses operating out of Urbale with a combined payroll totaling $108 million*. A new high school was constructed north of town Center between 1967 and 1969 while another new elementary school opened south of town Center just west of Interstate 55 in 1974*. These schools all continue serving students today although some have since been converted into apartments or other uses.* Today’s economy has changed dramatically since those days with many businesses shutting down or moving away because they are not able to compete with online shopping or services provided by neighboring towns such as Clive or West Des Moines. But despite these difficulties; Urbandale remains America’s smallest city by population – only having 3200 residents*! And even though its size may make it difficult to get involved in many aspectsof life outsideof work; its spirit – headlined by its annual “ urbane event” golf tournament - continues to keep things humming along!
