Urbandale is a small town in central Iowa, United States. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1871 by settlers from Illinois. Urbandale is located on the southern edge of the Des Moines metropolitan area and is part of the Iowa City-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a simple farmstead with just over twenty residents in 1871. By 1880, it had grown to include a school, store, and post office. In 1912, Urbandale became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and council members who were also responsible for its affairs within the municipality limits. In 1978, Urbandale was unincorporated again but still retains its municipal status as well as its right to vote and be represented on local councils. In recent years, Urbandsale has become known for its agricultural products such as cornmeal and flour; however, it also produces hay and other vegetables for local markets. Additionally, Urbandsale has been home to several businesses that have made their mark on the community including Chinook Plastics which manufactures plastic water bottles; J & J Grain Mill which processes wheat into flour; and Eveready Electric vehicles which produce electricity from car batteries when used in reverse vending machines across the Midwest.
