Spencer, Iowa is a small town in the US state of Iowa. It was founded in 1871 by Spencer Cottage manufacturer James W. Merrill and his family. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. Beginning around 1920 when American automobile production began rampsing up rapidly due to World War I demand (and consequent decline in transportation costs), downtown became one of many key areas throughout westernIowa where autos could be bought and used for work or pleasure outside their home communities while still keeping within their community's boundaries - something that continues to this day with some adjoining towns even incorporating aspects of Downtown Sioux City despite having far less population size than either city!
