Spencer is a town in Dodge County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Spencer is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines metropolitan area. The first settlers in Spencer were James and Catharine (Foley) Baird in 1854. They came from Scotland and arrived on horseback. They built a log cabin on the east side of what is now US Highway 611. In 1862, they bought 600 acres of land east of US Highway 611 and laid out a community called Stroudsburg which later became Spencer. In 1871, James Baird died leaving his wife Catharine to carry on the business. She taught school for two years before starting her own teaching business with her children John and Sarah Baird in 1872 which continued until 1916 when Catharine retired to become full time mother again; their son John continued the business until he passed away in 1980. In 1902, J P Snively organized the Spencer Agricultural Society which provided seed for farmers throughout northeast Iowa during dry years like that year's drought; it continues to this day as one of Spencer's most important civic activities .
