Spencer was founded in 1855 and named for Captain James Spencer of the Missouri River Survey. It is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The first post office in Spencer was established on July 7, 1855. It was located two miles (3 km) west of the present town center on what is now US-6 south of its junction with US-23. The plat for Spencer's village was filed on October 15, 1855 and approved by the Iowa State Board of Land Appraisers on November 9, 1855. Spencer's first store opened in December 1856 at what is now First National Bank building #1A; it became incorporated as a city on January 1, 1907. The first mayor of Spencer was J P Burchardt from 1907 to 1909; he later served as mayor from 1918 to 1922 and 1933 to 1939. On February 4, 1912 the original four blocks east of Center Street were dedicated as Pioneer Square Park which remains one of the most popular locations in town today for events such as arts Alive! dances and summer concerts headlined by local bands and orchestras during festivals throughout the year

Today, the Town of Spencer preserves some remnants of the Spencer Furniture Company including three buildings that were used as factory headquarters until 1971 when they were replaced by a new building constructed on land donated by George and Emma Spencer to the Town of Spencer."
