Spencer, Iowa is a small town in eastern Iowa that was founded by George Spencer in 1856. It has a population of about 2,000 people today and is the county seat of Spencer County. The town was named for Spencer's father, John A. Spencer. In 1907, George W. Gilbert donated land to the town for a public library and included an alley between his home and the library in his donation. The first building on this property was built in 1909. The current library building was dedicated on May 3, 1970 by then-Governor Robert Jauch. The history of Spencer begins with George Spencer's arrival to the area in 1856. He started out farming and ranching near what is now known as downtown Spencer. In addition to his farmstead and ranching operation, George also constructed a cotton gin and other mills around which he soon organized various businesses including gristmill, foundry, post office, livery stable, wagon factory and schoolhouse among others. In 1861, when Civil War began in America, George decided to join the Union army and enlisted in Company K of the 7thIowa Infantry Regiment at Cedar Rapids under General Ulysses S Grant who had just won the war against Confederate States of America (CSA). After three years service at Camp Floyd near Chattanooga Tennessee.,George returned home to help start up his new mill operations again after being discharged from duty with wounds received at Battle of Fort Donelson south of Memphis Arkansas on April 9th 1865 days before Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as president following the American Civil War ended with Confederate General Robert Ewart Burnside's surrender at Appomattox Court House four days later on April 12th 1865 after three months fighting against Union forces led by General Ulysses S Grant who had assumed command following Grant's successful victory over Burnside at Fort Donelson In 1907 Governor Robert Jauch announced that he would build a new public library into what were then private garage spaces inside Gilbert's home located east off High Street across from present day Park Avenue Northeast which served as bothGilbert's housekeeper/domestic servant until her death in 1921 while serving as MrsJauch’s guest during their official visit to Iowa City; then MrsJauch’s personal property until it became part of University Village open housing development encompassing all[the] buildings adjacent thereto owned or controlled by UIUC Extension Service; finally UIUC Extension Service Property Owned & Controlled By University Village Development Corporation On May 3rd 1970 construction began on what would become one of America’s most important libraries opening its doors to visitors on November 16th 1971 followed two more decades hosting events both within and outside its walls becoming an ever-lasting reminder not only of what made this small town unique but also why it remains so popular today Today there are many shops available within walking distance including several clothing stores along with several banks including First National Bank (founded1875), State Savings Bank (founded1877), US Bancorp (1902), Wells Fargo bank (1915) among others making it easy for residents to get their shopping needs covered while also providing services such as real estate brokerage
