Spencer is a small town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Spencer is located on the Mississippi River and has a humid subtropical climate. The first settler in Spencer was George Heeney in 1847. Spencer began to prosper as a strategic location for transportation on the river because it provided easy access to points north and west. In 1870, Spencer had 4 stores, 2 schools, and 10 residents. The population grew rapidly due to agricultural production (mainly corn) and mining operations that took place nearby starting in the late 19th century. By 1920, there were 13 businesses with a total payroll of $1 million dollars and 337 residents. In 1940, when World War II began, many factory jobs disappeared due to wartime demand for munitions but also because of increasing construction costs associated with bombers being built in Sinatra Field near Spencer. With railroads no longer providing important transportation links between cities or towns throughout Iowa during World War II-caused by technological advances-spencer experienced rapid growth as an agricultural center without any corresponding increase in employment opportunities for its citizens who now depended upon agriculture for their livelihoods rather than industry or commerce In 1951-1952 when Interstate 80 was built through central Iowa-spencer’s growth slowed significantly while people continued to farmstead residence which they would do until relocation became more difficult during the 1970s after extensive environmental damage was done to their land caused by wind turbines located adjacent to their homes . In recent years however some redevelopment has taken place including new housing developments along I-80 east of town while downtown remains largely undeveloped despite efforts by local developers such as Rexall Drugs Incorporated (now Walmart) over several decades ago to bring development within reach . While much progress has been made recently there are still numerous challenges that must be addressed before spencer can become an established community like most other western Iowa communities such as Dyersburg which have seen significant increases in population density over time without corresponding increases in infrastructure or services

In 1847, John D'Angelo began importing ground coffee from Switzerland into New York City for use in bakery and brewing purposes. This new type of coffee became popular because it was less bitter than other types of coffee and could be brewed with a smaller pot size than traditional espresso cups. In 1861, Dutch entrepreneur Jacob van Houten established a small business producing green beans at his farm outside Rotterdam called café tjeunende Holland (coffee with milk). This early Dutch café culture helped lead to the development of modern espresso houses around the world. During World War II, German forces invaded Belgium and Netherlands which led to restrictions on production of coffees inside those countries by Nazi officials.
