The Spencer Army Depot was the home of the Iowa National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment from 1951 to 1957. From then until 1959, it was also the home of the 9th Armored Cavalry Squadron. The squadron was deployed to Vietnam in 1965 and 1966 and served as part of Operation Market Garden. In 1970, they returned to duty in support of Desert Shield/Desert Storm. In 1992, the depot closed its doors for good after serving as an armory for nearly 20 years. Today, it is used as a storage facility for military equipment and is open to the public for tours every other month during summertime.
