The Navy has a long and proud history in Sioux City, Iowa. The first ship to dock in the city was the USS Constitution on October 14, 1846. The USS John C. Fremont arrived in Sioux City on December 10, 1847 and anchored at the docks until February 8, 1850 when it departed for California. On October 14, 1861, the USS Des Moines arrived in Sioux City after departing from Council Bluffs, Iowa as part of Union forces commanded by Admiral David Dixon Porter. On November 2nd, 1861 Omaha Beach was stormed by Confederate troops under General Robert E. Lee and Lord Cornwallis surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House in Virginia; this event is also celebrated as Veterans Day in Iowa. On December 10th 1862 the USS Cumberland sailed into town with 1st Lieutenant George Armstrong Custer commanding; he had just been captured at Little Bighorn during the Battle of Little Bighorn on July 6th 1863. In 1865-1866 both sides used Sioux City as a base of operations during the Indian Wars fought throughout Nebraska and Kansas; on April 17th 1865 Commodore Perry's squadron of six ships arrived here en route tofight against Mexican forces off Campeche Mexico; they succeeded but were forced to retire due to intense fire from shore batteries only about 100 yards away! The admiral returned that night with over 30 guns! On September 15th 1867 Commodore Perry's flagship explore completed her maiden voyage from San Francisco Bay bringing 850 passengers and crew home after circumnavigating America twice including stops at Kodiak Island (in Alaska) and Tahiti (in French Polynesia). She finally reached her destination on November 12th 1867!! The navy presence continued until 1942 when all naval vessels were ordered decommissioned except for HMS Resolution which served as barracks for naval aviation training pilots prior to being redesignated an antisubmarine vessel - she would remain active until 1984! In 1948-1949 two more ships - USS Birmingham (LPH 9)and LPH 11 - came into town helping build up Harlingen Lake recreational area along with five other military surplus boats which would become known collectively as "The Great Lakes Fleet". These vessels would serve through most of the late 1940s before being mothballed again beginning in 1951 following Korean War hostilities.. In 1957-1958 three more boats - LPH 15 (a Coast Guard Cutter), LPH 16 (newly built ex Royal Australian Navy HMAS Daring),and LPH 17 (leased from US Army Corps Maritime Administration) – came into town helping build up Cedar Rapids Harbor alongside four other military surplus boats which would become known collectively as "The Great Lakes Fleet II". These vessels would serve through most of their tenure before being decommissioned beginning in 1959 following Soviet Uniontakeover of Eastern Europe!.

The earliest Known example of a Naval decoration is given credit to Commodore James Cook who received his Order Pour le Mérite at France’s Versailles Palace on October 10th 1779 for distinguished services in rounding up Tahiti’s natives after they had revolted against British rule. This award represented the first time a commissioned officer had been awarded such an honour by France alone since Louis XIV had bestowed similar honours upon his favourite Dutch captains in 1674-5. The order was eventually disbanded because it became very difficult to get medals while serving aboard rich ships due mainly to regulations set down by London merchants who controlled naval production at that time Many individual sailors also received Medals posthumously which is documented through records kept by both American and British navies alike However some officers such as Commodore James Cook actually achieved distinction through service awards like this one rather than just receiving medals These are commonly known as “Naval Achievement Awards”
