The National Guard of Sioux City, Iowa was organized on September 16, 1861. The first national guard unit in Sioux City was the 2nd Regiment of Iowa Infantry. This regiment was mobilized on October 5, 1861 and served in the Union army during the Civil War. The 2nd Regiment of Iowa Infantry disbanded after the war. In 1916, the Sioux City National Guard activated its 1st Battalion which consisted of men from Des Moines, Iowa. The battalion served in World War I and II as a part of United States forces in Europe and Asia.
