The history of Sioux City begins with the arrival of Europeans in what is now Iowa in 1831. The area that would become SiouxCity was part of present-day Minnesota at the time, and early settlers were farmers who journeyed overland from Minnesota to find land that could be used for farming. In 1835, John Doane discovered coal near present-day Sioux City, and began operations on his farm there. The first post office in Indian Territory was established at Sioux City on July 1, 1840, when James Worthy sent out a letter asking residents for subscriptions to help him build a road between Council Bluffs (now Omaha) and Dodgeville (now Des Moines). By 1851, many settlers had arrived in Dakota Territory due to new Land Rush policies set by President James K. Polk which offered territorial acreages at fractional values compared to what would be available on surveyed tracts. This led to an intense competition for land within Indian Territory as well as among settler groups themselves. In 1868, when Iowa statehood was granted by Congress following the Civil War,SiouxCity became its capital. The city played an important role in American culture during this time period with its large population of Native Americans who lived there until 1960s when their community was forcibly removed by Ulysses S. Grant’s General Order No. 90A which authorizes military action against “natives†living east of Red River River under guise of suppressing them militarily without any legal justification or consulted with their leaders beforehand. Many Native Americans were displaced during this time period including some who moved into SiouxCity after being relocated elsewhere on reservations across the Midwest due to political pressure from federal officials such as Ulysses S. Grant himself
