Sioux City is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa, located in the east-central part of the state. It is bordered by Cedar Rapids to the north, Hiawatha County to the east, and Dubuque County to the south. Sioux City was founded on October 6, 1854, as a result of what was then known as The Nebraska Purchase. The city's current borders were created in 1908 when Cedar Rapids and Muscatine were merged into one municipality. As of 2015, Sioux City had a population of 66,362. The first settler in Sioux City was John Dickey who arrived on October 6, 1854 from Omaha, Nebraska with his family and sixteen others. Dickey built a cabin near what is now Fourth Street and Main Avenue and named it Fort Dearborn after General Stephen Averill Dearborn who had purchased land adjacent to the city in 1848. On November 15th1856, while under military occupation by General Dodge at Fort Howard an uprising took place which ended with nine people being killed including Dickey himself due to lack of food or water supplies within the besieged fortifications; this event helped spur development in nearby Cedar Rapids which began shortly afterwards In 1908 when Cedar Rapids and Muscatine were merged into one municipality, Sioux City became its second largest city after Iowa Falls (1907). At that time it had a population of 382 residents; however over time its size has only grown moderately with a total population currently above 600 residents. Major job sectors that have arisen since then include health care (which mushroomed following World War II), education (including both traditional high school students completing their undergraduate studies here before moving on for graduate work elsewhere), research & development (particularly related to green technology), manufacturing ( spanning everything from homebuilders to pharmaceuticals) and government services (chiefly social welfare). In addition many small businesses have sprung up around downtown areas such as 124th Street South/Southport Boulevard and First Avenue West/Old Depot Road which are especially conducive for startups due to their close proximity to transportation options as well as easy access to resources like jobsites & incubators

The Sioux City, Iowa area was first settled in 1847. The town formed from the merger of two other towns, North Sioux City and South Sioux City. The name "Sioux City" is derived from the Sioux word "sáiksa". In 1904, the city was renamed after General George Armstrong Custer.
