The Sioux City, Iowa area was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. The first European to arrive in the area was Jean Baptiste Point de la Honce, a French fur trader, in 1824. He named the area Des Moines after his home town of Monsigny, France. In 1836, General James K. Polk sent a force of soldiers to explore the Missouri River and discovered what would be later called Sioux City. The city was founded on November 3, 1836 by traders from Missouri and Minnesota under the leadership of Captain John Dickey. The city became a key point on the Underground Railroad as fugitive slaves attempted to escape to freedom in Illinois or Wisconsin.
