The Sioux City Army Ammunition Plant, also known as the Sioux City Armory, was built in 1917 by order of General George Armstrong Custer. The plant became operational in 1917 and was used to produce ammunition for the United States army. In 1941, the armory was sold to the city and it continued production of ammunition until 1978. The armory closed down completely in 1978 and demolition started in 1984. The armory is now a museum which is open to the public. One of the earliest purchases made by Sioux City was an artillery piece from Philadelphia that had been shipment there by rail. This artillery piece, designated Model 1873, arrived on July 3rd, 1898 and served with distinction during the Mexican-American War. It was later transferred to Fort Dodge where it saw action against Apache Native Americans in 1901-1902 before being decommissioned at Fort Dodge on October 9th, 1902. Unfortunately for Sioux City, this particular cannon still remains missing to this day! In 1915, General Nelson Miles ordered construction of a new armory located adjacent to the old munitions plant in order to better support American operations in World War I. The new armory became operational on April 20th, 1916 and ultimately functioned as an important center for storage and distribution of munitions throughout Minnesota and Iowa’s northwest corner region (known today as Dakota Territory). In addition to its role as a military arsenal, the Armry also played host to various events such as concerts and balls during wartime (e.g., 1918 4th Street Ball). After World War I ended hostilities ceased at end of 1919 however; ammo production resumed at Sioux City Arsenal only under new control from National Firearms Company (NFC) following purchase by National Defense Act Administration on November 16th 1920 under Section 2(a)of National Security Act Amendments Of 1921 through Patrick J . Leahy becoming United States Secretary of State effective December 12th 1920; national firearms company continued operation withMissouri & Iowa Gun Mfg Co taking over manufacturing plants associated with NFC including plant at Indianola/Sioux Falls beginning January 1922 thru May 1923; all plants were transferred back into NFC control effective June 15th 1923 when NRA Administrator became acting Secretary pursuant thereto; all plants were closed March 1st 1924 having achieved total capacity of 534 million rounds per annum or approximately 55% of total world production at that time….

The Sioux City Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to World War I. The unit was activated on October 25th, 1917 and served in the Iowa Division of the American Expeditionary Forces. In 1919, the Sioux City Army National Guard went camping with other units in Missouri as part of the United States Department of Camping and Recreation program. On July 9th, 1922, the Sioux City Army National Guard participated in maneuvers at Hickory Ridge near Council Bluffs. This event is considered to be when the unit first became an all-volunteer force. The organization was then redesignated as the 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team (1IBCT) on November 15th, 1942. The brigade was mobilized on December 3rd, 1941 and served in World War II until September 1945. On February 24th, 1951, 1IBCT was transferred from active duty to reserve status and re-designated as Headquarters & Service Battalion (H&SB), 112th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (112IBCT). HQ & SVC remained inactive for six months before it was reactivated on May 5th under new command structure with 1st Infantry Division's 333rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (333IBCT).HQ & SVC participated in exercises at Fort Polk Louisiana from October 1959 through March 1960 before deploying to Vietnam where it took part in Operation Rolling Thunder from January 1969 through April 1970. On August 2nd 1978 H&SVC returned home after serving two tours of duty overseas with distinction earning two Silver Stars for heroism while performing combat patrols outside Saigon during Tet Offensive operations that helped General Nguyen Cao Ky win control over South Vietnam
Sioux City, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa that serves as the capital of the Sioux City metropolitan area. The population was 43,811 at the 2010 census, making it one of the most populous cities in Iowa and one of its fastest-growing areas. The city is located on the Missouri River, about 120 miles (185 km) north of Des Moines and 320 miles (500 km) south of Omaha. The first settlers in Sioux City were native Americans who established a small village on an island in what is now called Council Bluffs Creek. In 1854, General James K. Polk established Fort Dodge on this same creek to provide protection from Comanche and Kiowa Indians who were then pillaging through central Iowa Territory. In 1861, when Missouri became a Confederate States territory after the Civil War, Sioux City was given to Nebraska by Abraham Lincoln as part of Treaty No. 11 which ceded all Central Nebraska Territories east of the Platte River to United States control including Dakota Territory which included present-day Sioux City and other townships within today’s Nebraskan boundaries. In 1867, when Sioux City was founded as a town by businessmen John Aiken and George Stephenson along with land donated by Major lobe Gorman and others in nearby Bolton Township, it was one of five new towns created within Indian Territory during Reconstruction following America’s formal reclamation process following the American Civil War. At that time much larger Chicago had just been founded and many people felt that Sioux City should have been among those first to benefit from opportunities created by President Andrew Johnson’s “Great Society” programs such as free education for African Americansand social services for Native Americans livingeastofthe Mississippi Riverin Oklahoma Territory which had been acquired from Mexico under terms of Treaty No 4).
