Coffee has been a part of the Ottumwa, Iowa community since the early 1800s. In 1847, John C. Headley and his brother-in-law, Elijah Perkins started to grow coffee beans in a small field near the present day intersection of State Street and 2nd Avenue. The Headleys were among the first people to set up shop in Ottumwa. Over time, other local farmers and traders joined forces with John C. Headley to create a cooperative coffee business. The early Ottumwa coffee farmers bought their beans from nearby towns such as Cedar Rapids and Dubuque. However, by 1850, most of the Ottumwa citizens had moved away for economic reasons or because they had become involved in farming elsewhere in the state. Nevertheless, many Ottumwa natives continued to grow coffee until about 1870 when it became too expensive to do so due to increased competition from other crops and businesses in town. After 1870, however, some Ottumwa residents returned to growing coffee for commercial purposes under various names including Dutchman’s Coffee (1872-1974), Hennepin Coffee Co., Dutchman’s Store (1875-1906), and finally Osterwald Coffee House (1907-.). By 1915 there were still three different Theo Wessel Hooft run coffeepots located on Main Street in downtown Ottumwahtua serving different brands of black Turkish espresso while also serving light breakfast items like pancakes and waffles etc.. The Ottumwa post office was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it closed in 1976. The first settler in Ottumwa Township was John Morrison. In 1870, James Doolittle moved to Ottumwa from Muscatine and began farming there. A large flour mill was built here by Doolittle in 1875. In 1898, Otto Kapp founded Ottumwa Creamery & Cheese Co., which remains one of the town's largest employers to this day (it employed more than 1,000 people at its peak). Also headquartered here are Kapp Funeral Home and Kapp Realty Trust (a real estate firm). According to the 2000 US Census Bureau estimate of Population by Race/Ethnicity for Henry County (Iowa), as of June 10th2010: 94% White; 2% Black or African American; 0% Native American; <1% Asian or Pacific Islander; 3% other race/ethnicity
