Ottumwa, Iowa is a town in Dodge County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The Ottumwa post office was established in 1868 and discontinued in 1957. The community was named for John Ottumwa, an early settler. Ottumwa had a two-room schoolhouse built in 1875 and it served as the only school until 1907 when a new building was constructed. The first church in the community was organized in 1892 and named First Methodist Episcopal Church after its pastor, Reverend Mr. George Huggins. In 1901, the first store opened in Ottumwaa and continued to be operated by locals until it closed its doors in 1984 due to financial difficulties. In 1912, a sawmill was built on White River which began operations that year; it continues to operate today as a private mill. In 1916, Ottumwaa became home to the world's first radio station when WDIA signed on with 10 watts of power using construction help from local businessmen John Bohannon (owner of Bohannon Lumber) and Harry Blackman (founder of Blackman Radio). From 1936 through 1941, World War II produced some significant changes to life within Ottumwaa: residents voted to become officially bilingual during an election held that year; there were also plans for city hall services being provided through local civic organizations rather than by county government; however these never came about as planned because of funding limitations placed upon Dodge County during wartime efforts.
