In 1871, Ottumwa, Iowa City was the home of the first gun store in the United States. It was located on Second Street and Elm Street. The store was run by John Sweeny and his son, Frank. The store had a variety of guns including pistols, shotguns, rifles, and cannons. In 1912, John Sweeny purchased a piece of property that would become known as the Armory Complex. This complex included a large building used for storage, an engine house used for running the store's machinery, and a dozen or so outbuildings used for employee housing and other purposes. The armory remained in business until it closed its doors in 1938. At its closure, Ottumwaa's Gun Store had been one of the most important businesses in town. It had been responsible for manufacturing handguns and shotguns at both local mills and abroad. Ottumwa, Iowa (population: 382) is a town in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ottumwa is located on the Missouri River and falls within the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area. The first settler in Ottumwa was Samuel Halsey in 1838. The first post office was established in 1839, and the town was named for John Ottumwa, a landowner and member of the Illinois Territorial Legislature. In 1851, it became a city under state law. In 1865, Ottumwaa had two churches – one Methodist and one Baptist – as well as three schools: one for white children and two for colored children. A store opened in 1870 which served as a community center until 1965 when it burned down. A new store opened in 1978 which remains an active business today. The now defunct agricultural society known as "The Pioneers" organized around 1880 to promote agriculture among farmers living near or inside of Cedar Rapids proper when those areas were still rural with few opportunities for people to get involved with their local governments or businesses other than farming themselves . They also lobbied Congress to pass legislation making agriculture more accessible to low-income Americans through Direct Payment System loans that would have helped many farmers start their own businesses rather then rely on government handouts/grants they could not afford to pay back . Although successful in getting some form of federal assistance through these measures (it's still referenced by some members of Congress), agricultural society dissolution effectively ended any hope of furthering agricultural innovation within this traditionally rural area after decades of trying

Ottumwa is a small town in the U.S. state of Iowa, located on the Clearwater River. The population was 1,346 at the 2010 census. The Ottumwa community was founded in 1847 by German immigrants and is part of the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area. The first settler in Ottumwa was Johann Friedrich Nicolaus Kapp from Gotha, Germany. He and his family came to America in 1847 and settled on a farm near present-day Ottumwa. In 1851, he married Anna Elisabeth Weise from Hamburg, Germany and they had four children: Emilie (1852-1936), John Fenton Kapp (1854-1937), Anna May (1857-1920) and Clarence George Kapp (1859-1945). The early settlers were farmers who grew corn, potatoes, wheat and other crops; they also raised horses, dogs, cats and pigs. They built their homes using logs found along the banks of the Clearwater River. By 1870, there were 43 homes in the community—all wood frame structures with thatched roofs. In 1902, during World War I, Ottumwa became an important military airfield due to its location close to Cedar Rapids Airport; it served as both an auxiliary airfield for Army aviation units based in nearby Des Moines and as a base for bomber missions over Europe during that war. After World War II ended, many of Ottumwas residents moved away or left for other towns within Iowa or Illinois because of economic factors such as joblessness during peacetime while post-war rationing took hold; however some returned after some time out of state starting what would become known as "the old school" period which lasted until about 1984 when all schools closed down due to lack of funding from local governments throughout central Iowa which has created large gaps in educational opportunities throughout rural areas including Ottumwa where only about one third of residents now have access to quality education compared with 50 percent 20 years ago according to surveys conducted by the League Of Women Voters). A variety of businesses operated locally including two lumberyards/ sawmills which continue operation today while two others closed around 1990s due to competition from larger companies; blacksmiths services were available until 1948 when mills went out of business followed by bakery/cookery operations before being replaced by grocery stores beginning around 1970s which remain active today although most are smaller operations than earlier days typical store size being under 25 feet wide featuring single aisle formats with multiple checkout lanes making it difficult for customers trying to buy items more than once Today there are few if any remaining businesses open up beyond light manufacturing or service sectors such as internet cafes providing Internet access rather then traditional retail functions typically found elsewhere these days but limited opportunity exists for people living within walking distance outside major urban areas similar situation exists within much larger cities where residential zoning allows larger buildings with unlimited parking spaces developments like this have become common across much central Iowa not just in small towns having very limited options for residents unless you are lucky enough to live inside an incorporated city limits perimeterobe
The Ottumwa Sioux Tribe, who were the original inhabitants of what is now Ottumwa, Iowa, lived there for centuries. The first European to arrive in present-day Ottumwa was Frenchman Jean Nicolet in 1782. In 1812, the United States acquired what is now Iowa from Mexico and established it as part of the Dakota Territory. The tribe's leaders decided to move to new territory in order to protect their land and their way of life. They arrived at what is now Ottumwa in 1838 and set up a government under Chief White Earth. A year later, they moved again, this time settling on the banks of the Des Moines River. There they built their first village and began trading with other tribes. Over time, they developed a strong economy based on agriculture and hunting resources. By 1912, however, all of the Sioux had died from disease or warfare combined with poor living conditions on their new reservation. In 1930, after years of negotiation and pressure from , Congress gave them back their land by executive order - making it one of the last reservations in America to be given back to native people following World War II policies designed to promote Native American self-reliance
