Ottumwa is a small town in Crawford County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,321 at the 2000 census. It is the most populous municipality in Crawford County. Ottumwa is located on the Missouri River and it is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. Crawford County was created in 1836 and named for John Crawford, an American settler who died during the Gold Rush of 1848. When Iowa Territory was organized in 1854, Crawford County became one of its original counties. The county seat was moved to Ottumwa in 1865 after a situtation where two other towns had acceptedauga Creek as their capital and refused to move when Crawford COUNTY CHOSE OTUMWA as its new capitol. The first school in Ottumwa was opened by Reverend J H Morrison on October 15, 1868. A second school building was built in 1870-71 by local farmer James Ransom Jr.. A third school building (now used as a library) was erected on Court Street in 1923-24 by Mrs Mary Kappenberger with help from her husband Carl Kappenberger Sr.. In 1927-28, a fourth school building (now called the Community Center) was constructed on Airport Road by Mr G F Henson with help from his son George Fenton Henson III.. In 1951, Mrs Bessie Eldredge donated land east of Court Street for a new high school which would serve as Varsity High School until it closed in 1984; that same year also saw the dedication of Ottumwah’s Veterans Memorial Park which honors all those who have served our country through military service or civilian work since World War II. Today, there are four schools within the city limits: Varsity High School (formerly known as “Ottumwa East High School”), Lincoln Elementary School (formerly known as “Lincoln Junior/Senior High School”), Southview Middle/High School (formerly known as “Southview Senior/High School”), and Westside Middle/High School (formerly known as “Westside Junior/ Senior HighSchool”). In addition to its namesake river valley that includes more than 30 miles of unbroken bluffs along both banks of the Missouri River bisecting Otcumwah Township from north to south stretching for over 100 miles wide extending into neighboring Union County including numerous villages such as Ankeny Heights, Council Bluffs, Arlington Heights and Molineux Hills each with their own independent post office(s) until 1915 when they were consolidated into one large office complex under one name- Ankeny Heights Post Office-. This combined postal district extended services throughout much of central Iowa until 1975 when it finally ceased operations due to budget cuts affecting suburban mail delivery systems statewide .
