Coffey who later became known as the “Father of Tactical Coffee” for his contributions to the industry. It wasn’t until 1916 that Oskaloosa had its own grocery store which served coffee from all over the state of Iowa and even into Minnesota! In 1944, when Mr. Coffey passed away, he bequeathed his business assets including a large amount of premium beans to Stroudsburg Coffee Company which continues to produce tactical coffee today! Oskaloosa, Iowa is a small town in the northwest corner of Iowa. It lies on the banks of the Des Moines River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Des Moines and 30 miles (48 km) south-southwest of Cedar Rapids. The population was 5,549 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1866. The first store in Oskaloosa opened in 1867 and was located on Main Street. In 1870, a post office was organized and named Oskaloosa after nearby Osage Hills. At its peak, Oskaloosa had a population of 100 residents and two schools. By 1890, however, the town had shrunk to just 15 residents due to lack of business opportunities and competition from larger towns in central Iowa. In 1906, Oskaloosa became an incorporated city under state law; it had previously been a rural community with no municipal government. A new courthouse replaced the original courthouse which burned down in 1903; construction began on this structure but never completed due to World War I interference. In 1926, Oskaloosa merged with neighboring Cedar Rapids to form one city with a combined population of 508 people – Cedar Rapids still maintains its own government while Oskaloosa has essentially become part of Cedar Rapids proper since then.(1) Today's economy is based largely on agricultural production: cornmeal exports make up approximately 60% of total revenue while Manufacturing makes up only 10%. At the beginning of World War I, De La Rue patented his new style of stovetop espresso machine which used ground beans heated on a small fire placed above an open skillet over low heat. The popularity and effectiveness of this machine led De La Rue to start production manufacturing his own machines in 1916. DeLaRue's innovative design quickly gained favor among military commanders and otherwarriors who enjoyed their hot java beverages during wartime deployments or exercises. By the end of World War I, almost every major city in the world had at least one De La Rue café serving up high-quality espresso drinks from their unique stovetop machines. In 1923, two years after Donat DeLaRue's death, his son Harry opened up Harry's Coffee & Tea Co., Ltd., located in London's West End. At Harry's Cafeteria service was provided by hand through large metal pails filled with fresh ground beans from their own roasting plant situated adjacent to Whitechapel Road Railway Station where customers could buy their java beverages directly from the operators without going into any stores or restaurants

The company also built a sawmill and other factories in the town during this time period. Following World War II, Oskaloosa began to experience significant growth due to its proximity to Des Moines. In 1967, Oskaloosa received its own ZIP code and has been experiencing continued growth ever since.
The town of Oskaloosa, Iowa was founded in 1848 by George Washington Hays. The town was named for General John A. Oskaloosa, who had died in battle two years earlier. The first settler in the town was Isaac Newcomb. J.H. Macy and his brother-in-law, Jacob Wirthman, started a tannery in the town in 1850. In 1851, James Fenton bought land around the bend from Isaac Newcomb and began to build a house there. In 1853, he married Rachel Price and built the current home on their land. By 1865, the population of Oskaloosa had grown to about 150 people; it peaked at 300 in 1870 but decreased to 100 by 1880 due to low demand for goods produced by Fenton's tannery and other businesses that operated near it.
