However, as more people began moving westward towards Kansas Territory during the late 1850s due to advances in transportation and communication technology (such as railroads), farming became lessand less viable as an option for locals. By 1872 however, when Oskaloosa incorporation occurred it had already become apparent thatowntownwasnothinbutaghosttownbecauseofthepopulation growtharoundSiouxCity(Higgins)). With this change camean increased demand for housing downtown along with new business opportunities that could be explored thanks to improved transportation options available during this time period (Fowler). One such opportunity was the construction of the first railroad through central Iowa by Union Pacific Railroad in 1869 which allowed easterners living near Chicago access to much-needed goods they couldn’t get elsewerewest(Porter). This new development not only created jobs but also helpedtospurdevelopmentin downtownOscarkaerowithnewcommercialandresidential establishmentsalongwithhospitalsandaschool(Kramer/Snyder).
