The Iowa National Guard was founded on August 25, 1916 when the Iowa State Legislature declared a state of war against Germany. The first unit to be activated was the 191st Infantry Regiment which was mobilized in October 1916. The 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) was activated on November 9th and fought in World War I. On December 8th, 1917 the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), became part of the XXIV Corps and served in the Battle of Stalingrad. In 1919, after World War I ended, theIowa National Guard was redesignated as an army Reserve Army and continued to serve until May 3rd 1972 when it merged with the Regular Army to form the present day United States National Guardsman

Oskaloosa, Iowa is a small town located in the east-central portion of the state of Iowa. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Oskaloosa were the Sac and Fox Indians. The town was named after General John Fetterman, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as United States Attorney for Iowa Territory. In 1868, Oskaloosa was platted by Major John Winkleman and James Hickey and it became a village on July 1, 1868. On November 3, 1870, Oskaloosa had a population of 315 residents when it incorporated as a city. The citizens of Oskaloosa quickly built up an impressive economy thanks to their farmers and lumbermen businesses. One local business that thrived for many years was Lumber & Hardware Company which manufactured both lineal wood furniture and plank flooring products from local forest resources. The National Guard was founded on July 4, 1776, as a militia to protect the nation during the American Revolution. The first national guard units were raised in New York and Pennsylvania in 1777. In 1781, Congress created a national guard brigade in each state. The brigades were divided into regiments and companies and each regiment was organized into battalions or divisions. On November 25, 1814, President James K. Polk signed an act that authorized the National Guard to march in person with shields and swords for protection at all public occasions. On May 10 of that year, Major General Winfield Scott ordered 1st Infantry Regiment Armory built on Capitol Hill as the first permanent home of the National Guard Museum (now Smithsonian Institution). In 1861, when Missouri seceded from the United States, nearly 2 million men from 11 states called themselves “National Guards” to fight for secessionist causes. These troops were called back to service after Missouri’s admission into force of the Union. From 1862-1865, over 20 thousand soldiers served in West Virginia’s 3rd Military District during Confederate military operations against Fort Sumter (April 14-May 8), Fort Donelson (November 9-December 15), and Corinth (January 26-February 13). Western Virginia also saw service from Kentucky’s 1st Cavalry Division under Brigadier General George Haines during that time period. After Confederate victory at Appomattox Court House on April 6th 1865, most of these soldiers returned home; however many units continued serving through Reconstruction until 1871 when all military services were dissolved by President Ulysses S. Grant following his Emancipation Proclamation. When World War I began on April 6th 1914 there were only eight hundred members of the National Guard present throughout America due to equipment shortages and unit disbandments caused by wartime mobilization efforts alone! After six months of buildup there are now more than two millionGuardians spread throughout America ready should martial law be declared! On September 10th 1916 Presidium voted to create a new armory at Camp Chase near Cleveland Ohio as part of preparations for war with Austria which lead to troop movements across country starting on October 16th 1916 On December 12th 1916 President Woodrow Wilson activated Army Reserve Command which numbered over 100 000 men nationwide including 5500 cavalrymen who would serve in counterattack operations if necessary . By March 1917 both Armies had become full time . After World War I there was significant growth in army reserve forces with over 400 000 men mobilized for peacetime purposes between 1920-1927 unlike previous wars where militias functioned primarily within their state governments

Oskaloosa is a town in Iowa, United States. It was founded in 1845 and has been the county seat of Oskaloosa County since 1851. The population was 9,464 at the 2010 census. Oskaloosa is the smallest county in Iowa by land area and second-smallest by population size. The first permanent settler in what would become Oskaloosa County was Isaac Morse who arrived on horseback from Illinois on November 15, 1844. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Des Moines River northwest of present day Oskaloosa. The first courthouse in what would become Oskaloosa County was erected here on December 5, 1847 by Judge John Fenton with assistance from Samuel Hennepin, who had also come to Iowa that year to seek his fortune as a farmer and fur trader. In 1850, both Jesse Linn and Augustus Farnsworth established their homes here; Linn became an early postmaster and merchant while Farnsworth operated an inn known as "Farnsworth's Hotel" until it burned down in 1907. In 1851, when Iowa became a state., Judge Elisha Wigglesworth appointed George Bird as its first justice of the peace for Oskaloosa County; he served until 1865 when he resigned because of ill health. In 1865, Judge James Murtagh replaced Wigglesworth as justice of the peace; he served until 1893 when he too resigned because of ill health and died two years later at age 86 years old. From 1863 to 1893 there were six justices of the peace serving localities throughout Iowa; all but one were men (George Bird being exception). As early as1846, people were moving into what would become Oskaloosa County for various reasons: opportunities for agriculture or ranching near water supplies offered new opportunities for settlers; transportation improvements made it easier to move goods between settlements; Sioux Wars (1863-1865) led to increased military activity along Minnesota's border withIowa which caused many refugees to cross into Nebraska Territory seeking safety; gold discoveries at Rock Island Lake led miners to establish businesses hereabouts including several breweries soon followed The rapid growth of industry during this time period created headaches for authorities responsible for managing traffic congestion: inadequate road building capacity combined with heavy demand placed strains on cash registers at businesses carrying out transportations such as stagecoaches carrying passengers between communities across central Iowa . By 1870 only 1/3 of all business transacted within localities located less than 10 miles east or west of Cedar Rapids involved travelers using Routes 3 or 4 through centralIA – routes developed specifically for freight transportation purposes only! Furthermore agricultural production waxed and waned conspicuously without corresponding infrastructure developments parallelizing these different activities resulting in large areas becoming unproductive wilderness [ … ].[4]
