Oskaloosa is a small town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The main economic base of Oskaloosa is agriculture. The first Europeans to visit Oskaloosa were Frenchmen in 1794. The first settler in what is now Oskaloosa was John Purdy in 1828. He built the first house on the present site of Oskaloosa in 1829. A post office called "Oskaloosa" was established in 1836, and remained in operation until 1902. In 1888, a school named "Norman School" opened in what is now Oskaloosa. In 1919, it became a high school and continued to be known as Norman School until it merged with Westside High School to form Polk-Westside High School in 1984. In 1970, another school name change took place when Cedar Valley Junior/Senior High School opened at what is now South Park Lane and it became known as Cedar Valley schools until it merged with North Park Senior/Junior High School to form North Park-Cedar Valley Senior/Junior High Schools (now Polk-Central) in 2001. In 1961, a new high school building for Oskaloosan students was built on present day South Park Lane just south of the old Administration Building which served as both schools' gymnasiums from 1961 until 1974 when they were combined into one building and renamed Centralia HS after its then superintendent - Drury Hodge Centralia Academy (now West Side HS). On November 5th 1990 when Des Moines City Council passed an ordinance authorizing annexation by neighboring cities of East Des Moines (the city's original boundaries), all but one elementary school within walking distance of downtown Des Moines were annexed including Centralia HS becoming East Side Elementary; however, due to zoning changes made by zoning administrator Dick Kapp during his tenure at City Hall that excluded garages or enclosed parking spaces inside elementary buildings from being counted as accessory use space for those buildings which had been annexed & rezoned for housing uses only,[1]East Side Elementary still does not have access to itsGarage & Recreation Department which services other properties within walking distance such as their Midtown Plaza Shopping Center located just east of their campus via streetscape redevelopment that began before their enrollment increased significantly due to baby boomer growth throughout centralDes Moines since those early days (& concurrent suburban growth around them), making playing fields available adjacent thereto (& also making approaches possible from various neighborhoods adjacent thereto approximated by median street grid lines) finally providing some measure of structure & amenity lacking elsewhere on campuses outside similarly redeveloped areas serving large numbers pre-teens thru twenties

In 1854, Oskaloosa was founded as a town by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The town was named for General Oskaloosa, who served in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War. The expedition's leader, Captain John C. Fremont, had pronounced the word "Oska" incorrect because it sounded like " Sears." In 1855, a post office was established in Oskaloosa, and the name of the town slowly began to be changed to reflect its new location. By 1870, Oskaloosa had become an important center on the Iowa River due to its location near water resources and its role as a transportation hub for goods moving upstream from western Missouri and Illinois. Oskaloosa experienced significant growth during the late 19th century due to its importance as a manufacturing center for agricultural products such as maize, grain sorghum, cottonseed oil, butterfat and cheese. Additionally, Oskaloosa became known for its annual Old World fair that took place in September or October each year. The fairgrounds were home to more than 350 exhibitors from 24 countries who sold their products including textiles; furniture; jewelry; crops; pets; books (including American novels); music; artwork; food items and more. In 1915, Oskaloosa joined with neighboring Amesbury to form Amesbury-Oskaloosa Chamber of Commerce which continues today as one of Iowa's leading economic organizations
The town of Oskaloosa, Iowa was founded by German immigrants in the mid-19th century. The town was originally named "Herschel" after the family's farmstead. The name changed to "Oskaloosa" after a local creek which drained into the Des Moines River. After the Civil War, many Germans moved to Iowa and some left Oskaloosa for other towns in Iowa, but most of the original German settlers stayed and continued to operate a small business and raise livestock. In 1892, Oskaloosa had a city charter and began to grow as a cultural center for German-American residents of eastern Iowa. A year later, it became the capital of Indian Territory when that region was created from parts of Dakota and Missouri counties.
