Oskaloosa, Iowa is a small town located in Polk County, Iowa. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. Oskaloosa is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Polk County were French explorers watching the area during their fur trading trips in the early 1800s. They named it "Oscarie" after one of their men who had explored this area. The first permanent settler in what is now Polk County was James Wickersham, who arrived in 1836 and founded Wickersham City on the east side of present day Oskaloosa Creek. In 1847, John Anderton bought some land from James Wickersham for $4 per acre. Anderton started building a mill on the creek and named it "Oscarie." In 1851, he sold his interest in the mill to Isaac Earnest and moved to Oskaloosa with his family. Isaac Earnest built two more mills - "Earnest's Mill" on Elm Street and "George Mifflin's Mills" on West First Street - which helped support the growth of Oskaloosa over time. In 1907, Oscar Hinton donated land to build a school that would serve both rural residents as well as downtown citizens of Des Moines Township. Construction began on December 15th, 1907 and completed on January 3rd, 1908; thus becoming America's first public school outside of New York City! The brick structure served as a model for many local schools until it was replaced by an all metal building in 1978-79 which still serves as a reminder of that old school days!
