Iowa’s navy was founded in 1851, and the state has been a part of the United States Navy since 1917. In that time, Iowa’s navy has donated more than $1 million to the navy. The most recent donation from Iowa was made in 2018, and it will be used to purchase new supplies for the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 76) Fleet Readiness Center in Omaha, Nebraska. This gift is significant because it is the first time an Iowa donation has been used specifically for naval purposes. The history of North Liberty Naval Shipyard dates back to World War II when Iowa City businessmen Harry A. Sorenson and Walter E. Sheehan donated land on which the shipyard would be built. In 1947, Captain John Cavanaugh assumed command of USS Wichita (CA-34), one of three ships bought by the navy from Holland-America Line for use during World War II. Under Captain Cavanaugh’s leadership, Wichita became one of America’s most capable sea vessels; she helped sink many German submarines and contributed significantly to America’s victory over Japan at Okinawa. Captain Cavanaugh also served as skipper of USS Sioux City (AFR-4) during World War III and later commanded USS Quincy (CA-27). During his tenure as skipper of Quincy, he led her through numerous deployments including Operation Neptune Spear—the largest antisubmarine warfare operation ever mounted by American forces—andOperation Coral Sea–the first major battle between American warships and Japanese submarines offshore in seventy years!In retirement from active duty in 1969, Captain Cavanaugh continued to serve as a Commodore with US la Naval Reserve Unit until his death in 1987. He was posthumously awarded the Medal Of Honor for heroism while commanding Quincy at Okinawa! Today, North Liberty Naval Shipyard employs roughly 2200 sailors who provide crucial support to America's maritime heritage both at home and abroad. These sailors are responsible for maintaining our fleet by repairing ships like Wichita and Coral Sea; constructing new vessels like Abraham Lincoln; providing training opportunities for our Sailors Academy; maintenance services for our aircraft carriers Enterprise and Nimitz; serving as an integral part of US military operations around the world;and more!
