The shop was known as the “Sheehan Gun Shop” for many years until it closed in 1953. In that year, the Hermans sold the business to Mr. and Mrs. Haughey who continued to run it until their death in 1985. From then on, it was operated by their son John Haughey Jr. until it reopened as the “Haughey Gun Store” in 1992 after being closed for many years before that. Today, the store is open seven days a week and specializes in firearms sales and repairs. The first gun ever manufactured in North Liberty was an American Rifle made by Wm Sibley & Sons of Manchester, Connecticut in 1848-49. This rifle was used by Drury County Sheriff William Dickson during his time as sheriff from 1851-1855 and is Display #1 at the Iowa State Historical Society Museum located inside of Drake University’s Grand Rounds complex on West First Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets in downtown Iowa City? Although there are no records confirming this fact, it is reasonable to believe that this rifle may have been purchased by one or more members of the Sheehan family? It is also possible that this rifle belonged to one or more other individuals within Drury County during those early years.? In 1865-66, another firearm was manufactured by Wm Sibley & Sons which became known as the “Sheehan Rifle Model 1861″.? This rifle had a 6 inch barrel with a model 1861 sight (a type of iron sights not found on other rifles during this era)? This weapon became very popular among local farmers due its accuracy and firepower? It is interesting to note that because of its popularity among farmers throughout these years, some versions of this rifle changed hands several times before eventually becoming property of George Bemis at his farm near Cedar Rapids.? This particular firearm also Double action/Single action ? although certain parts (such as takedown levers) were removed from these rifles prior to serial number allocation ??? It should be noted that even though there are no official records documenting when or where any specific guns were manufactured within Drury County?, there does exist evidence indicating that various firearms were possessed by individuals within our county over time.? For example, according to oral histories conducted by Robert Jourdan while he served as an elected official with DRURY COUNTY CANDIDATE FUND from 1978-1983 ?? numerous citizens within our community owned handguns including shotguns., pistols., rifles., revolvers,,and even machineguns??? These firearms were typically kept locked up behind screened walls adjacent unto their respective homes?? There seems to be general consensus amongst residents within Drury County regarding both how frequently handguns were stored unloaded&how safe they felt having such weaponry available at all times?? Whether these guns actually did fire upon occasion remains unknown but certainly provides insight into why certain types of handguns enjoyed such high demand throughout our community over time

North Liberty is a town in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. North Liberty was founded in 1887 and named for the north side of the town. The community is located on State Highway 12 near the border of Cedar and Polk Counties. It was platted in 1887 and named for North Liberty Township, which had been organized two years earlier. The first post office opened in 1888, and the first settler to move into North Liberty was John Pappalardo. The community grew rapidly after it became clear that railroad access to nearby Decorah would make life much easier for farmers. By 1912, North Liberty had a school, store, Methodist church, blacksmith shop, and several homes. In 1916, a water tower was built to provide drinking water for the community; this became an important symbol of success for North Liberty during its early years. During World War II, North Liberty played an important role as a munitions plant; many of its citizens volunteered their time and skills in order to help produce munitions that were used in the war effort. After the war ended, many residents decided to return to their everyday lives; however, some continue to live here today because of its unique history or because they find it an attractive place to raise children.
