North Liberty is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 17,814 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Iowa and the largest city in Cedar Rapids. North Liberty is a town in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. The name comes from north of the village of North Liberty and south of the river. The first post office in North Liberty was established on December 12, 1864. The present post office building was built in 1903. It is a two-story wood frame structure with a gable roof. There are several outbuildings including a garage and workshop. In 1907 the town received its first electric light and power supply from Omaha Electric Railway Company under contract from the Town Board of North Liberty. This service continued until 1951 when it was replaced by an internal combustion engine driven system. In 1911 George Wessels opened his grocery store on High Street in North Liberty which became one of the most popular grocery stores in town. Other major businesses in early years were A & J Fordza agency (1914), Butterfield's bakery (1915), Smith's drugstore (1917), Gorman Bros fertilizer company (1920), and Wilhelm Brewery Incorporated (1920). Although many small businesses operated during these early years, it wasn't until after World War II that larger firms took over some or all of these businesses; this began with General Electric coming to town as part of their plant expansion in 1946 and continued through to today's era when large employers have taken over most local services. In 1937 Chuck Haughey organized what would become known as "North Liberty High School". He had been working for Des Moines Public Schools as an assistant superintendent for education administration before moving to Muscatine County to take charge of high school operations there. His idea for having a high school located within walking distance of every family led him to found North Liberty High School with Classes starting Wednesday morning September 5th 1937 classes were held at home through Friday afternoon with no weekend classes After World War II ended there were numerous changes taking place throughout America due to war production shortages caused by atomic bombing; one such change was that many small towns like North Liberty lost their status as agricultural villages and became instead more industrialized communities typical of these areas during the postwar periodSome notable aspects of this period include:urning telephone poles downtown instead of using ladders since electricity became available;largeRefrigerator/Freezer being delivered into town by truck beginning late 1940s;andthe establishmentof amusement parks like Cedar Point(Muscatine County Fairgrounds)during this time
