In addition to their retail store locations, they also have manufacturing facilities located near Ames and Des Moines for production of both espresso drinks and ground coffee products such as breakfasts and lattes. The first coffee roaster in town was established by Ebenezer Morse in 1857. Morse ran the business until his death in 1861. His grandson, Reuben Morse, continued the business until it closed in 1907. In 1916, Edwin Hogue opened the first grocery store in Newton and started selling coffee beans from his home. In 1922, John Daugherty opened an ice cream parlor on West 3rd Street which served as a meeting place for locals who enjoyed fresh roasted coffee. In 1951, Harry Goudreau opened a grocery store on East 2nd Street which became one of Newton’s most popular businesses during its years of operation. By 1970, when Newton’s post-World War II growth slowed down, many new businesses had opened up including a machine shop and printing shop that together contributed to the decline of society’s economy during this time period. However, over time some of these businesses have revived including Harry Goudreau’s grocery store which reopened in 2003 after being closed for 15 years due to Hurricane IA damage*. Additionally, several new restaurants have sprung up such as Lighthouse Coffee & Donuts* (now defunct) and The Pie Kitchen* (closed). Overall though there is still much left to be done within this vibrant community that continues to thrive thanks to its rich coffee history!
Newton is a town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. Newton was founded in 1881 by George Newton and his wife Lucy. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area. George Newton came to America from England in 1848 and started a flour mill in what is now Newton. In 1881, he built a log cabin on the corner of High and Second Streets. He named it "Newton" after himself and his wife Lucy. The first post office was established in Newton in 1888. In 1912, the community began annexing villages around it for incorporation into Newton Village Incorporated (later renamed Waterloo). Lucy Newton died in 1928 and George Newton passed away in 1950; both are buried at Elmwood Cemetery. The town has since reverted back to its original name without her blessing. Newton had a population of 2,000 when it became an incorporated village; however, due to annexation by Waterloo, the population rose to 7,500 by 2000 before dropping again to 5,700 at the 2010 census due to growth within Waterloo itself instead of within the boundaries of Newton Village Incorporated which included much of farm land that had once been annexed into NewTON! The current population size as reported by the US Census Bureau is 1,878 persons according to their July 2017 estimate
