Newton, Iowa is a small town in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Iowa. It is located on the Des Moines River, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Sioux City and 50 miles (80 km) north of Cedar Rapids. Newton was founded in 1871 by George Newton and his family, who were farmers. The town was named for John Newton, an American Revolutionary War soldier and surveyor who had been killed in action in 1775. In 1907, president Theodore Roosevelt visited Newton while he was campaigning for the presidency and pronounced it "the most beautiful place I have ever seen". According to the2010 census estimate, Newton has a population of 476 people. The majority of residents are white; however, there are also many black and Hispanic residents as well as some Asians and Native Americans. Newton is home to two universities—Iowa State University (ISU) and Northern Illinois University—and several businesses including Ames Services Inc., United States Steel Corporation, Iowa Beef Packers Inc., Unity Insurance Company, Andover Mills Inc., Jockey Club Speedway & Racetrack Ltd., Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewing Company, Hendricks Machine ShopInc., Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Mitchell's Department Store chain store, Independence High School and the Newton Library system which serves all of central Iowa with its library building on Main Street between 2nd Street North and 3rd Street South. George Newton started farming near what is now Newton in 1871 after returning from fighting during the American Revolution. He moved his farm 60 miles northeast to what became Waterloo County in 1872 because he felt that water supplies would be more easily accessible there than they would be near his original farmstead on the Des Moines River where he lived with his family until 1902 when he sold them land to help establish Waterloo County Courthouse Square four blocks east from where they currently sit today at 5th Avenue Southeast and Walnut Street Northeast cornering 1st Avenue Northwest cornering 2nd Avenue Northwest There were four other early settlers: David Gentry (1873-1874), James Cramer (1877-78), Charles Hickey (1879-81), Solomon Bealman(1883). After living for a few years at Gentry’s farm southeast of Waterloo County before moving back into Waterloo County himself around 1885 when inexpensive farmland became available thereabouts through purchases from members or associates of Congressmen John Alesi[1] Both George Newton (~1870-) da left their farms behind them when they settled down permanently adjacent to ISU campus circa 1900; Edwin Harmon {$Date: 1890} established Harmon Grain Elevators on property just west side tracks off US Highway 95/CR 231 next door then raised corn until 1910 - one year prior to founding IA State Normal School [now UIUC], site current Home Depot parking lot upon withdrawal from public use
