Newton is a town in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. Newton was founded in 1857 by John Newton and his wife Elizabeth. The first post office was established in Newton on December 10, 1857. Newtons first store was built on the north side of town. In 1861, Newton became the county seat of Marshall County and Newtons first school was built on the east side of town. In 1865, a millrace nearby connected the northeast and southeast forks of the Des Moines River which made transportation easier and allowed for more commerce to grow in Newton area. A railroad tracks were completed through Newton in 1867 which made it easier for people to move around the community. In 1870-71, a Mechanicsville Agricultural School (now part of Iowa State University)was built near what is now southwest corner of Third Street and Central Avenue in Newton just south of where Interstate 80 meets Interstate 5th Street today. By 1875-76, there were twenty three businesses operating in Newton with five hundred residents living within one mile of either downtown or mechanicsville schoolgrounds! This growth caused some destruction as well as some additions such as two churches being built at what is now southwest corner Third Street and Central Avenue; both are still standing today! In 1907-08 when newNormal School building opened due to consolidation efforts between various schools across Marshall County all educators from that time period taught within its walls including future Superintendent Luther Coolidge himself! Additionally Stonington High School opened their doors that fall during this same time period across from Normal during very limited enrollment numbers however its impact can still be felt throughout many aspects related to education & culture in that small community until quite recently! Norman Borland who played football for Iowa State University & later went on to become President Bill Clinton’s Secretary Of Commerce also lived briefly (primary residence: 4100 Blakely Ave NE) adjacent to Normal/Marshalltown while attending college here incidentally leading up to some pretty significant things like him becoming an Iowan Citizen after moving back home & helping lead what would eventually become known as “The Country Club Kids” into adulthood including eventual stints coaching basketball (& later soccer) at ISU before becoming president/CEO @ Coca Cola Co.) finally retiring here permanently late last year after over 50 years productive service here!!!
