Muscatine, Iowa is a small town located in Muscatine County, Iowa. The population was 1,584 as of the 2010 census. It was founded in 1853 and named for General James Muscatine, an American general who fought in the Mexican War and the Indian Wars. The Muscatine School District serves Muscatine and its surrounding communities. The first settler to arrive in what is now Muscatine County was John Pritchard on May 20, 1853. He and his family camped near present-day Lisbon on the banks of the Big Sioux River. By 1860, there were 10 families living in present-day Muscatine Township alone. In 1867, Jens Rasmussen arrived from Denmark with his family and set up a farm northwest of town on land that would later become part of townsite #2. Rasmussen erected a log cabin on this property which served as their home until they sold it in 1902 to Gertrude HildebrandtGS). In 1907 James Latham built a house on this site which he called "The Farm". This structure still stands today approximately two miles south of town along US Highway 7 (Old Route 6). During World War II local residents raised canned goods for the military effort to help support soldiers stationed throughout America. Many muskets were collected by residents during this time and are currently stored at Local History Museum #3C4HG
