The Muscatine Coast Guard Auxiliary gift history began in 1916 when Captain John S. Cook and First Lieutenant Harry W. Beattie of the Iowa National Guard founded the Auxiliary. The Auxiliary functioned as a volunteer organization providing emergency medical assistance to local fishermen and coastal residents during times of emergency. In 1940, the Auxiliary was redesignated the Muscatine Coast Guard Volunteer Unit and continued its emergency services until 1971 when it was disbanded. Throughout its history, the Muscatine Coast Guard Volunteer Unit has donated over 1,000 items including radios, literature, supplies, tools and equipment, clothes and helmets. Some of these donations have been used for specific coast guard functions such as guarding ports or working on marine projects; however, many have also been given to other organizations such as Habitat for Humanity or Rotary International. In 1946, Captain John Cavanaugh purchased a yacht from Captains Cook and Beattie which he renamed "Speedwell". He used this vessel for charity events throughout the Midwest region and donated many items along with his proceeds to various charities including The Salvation Army and The Methodist Church. In 1992Captain Cavanaugh donated his yacht "Cavalier" to the Muscatine Coast Guard Voluntary Unit in memory of his father who had served with the unit during World War II. This donation helped support squadron programs such as public education campaigns (such as an anti-smoking campaign) while also helping preserve our maritime heritage in Muscatine. Muscatine, Iowa is a town in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Missouri River and is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The Muscatine Railroad passed through the town in 1881. The first settler in Muscatine was Isaac Stockman, who built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the river in 1847. He named his settlement Muscatine after his home state of New York. Some early settlers were John Mahoney and Daniel Carroll from Canada; Peter Kapp from Germany; and Abraham Dolan from Bohemia (now Czech Republic). In 1851, Andrew Jackson bought all of present-day Muscatine from Stockman for $5 per acre ($ today). In 1861, James Fenton platted what is now downtown Muscatine and laid out streets north to south. At that time, it was known as "Fentonville". A post office was established at Fentonville in 1865, and remained in operation until it closed in 1903. In 1881, the Missouri River Railway reachedmuscatel by way of what is now downtown Muscatine. At that time there were only two stores and one hotel within muscatel limits - both located on Main Street near where Union Pacific tracks crossed over the river later that year. That same year saw another significant development when Iowa Wesleyan University moved into its initial campus building on Second Street just east of Main Street - becoming one of only two universities west of Chicago to do so at that point (the other being Brown University). In 1896–97 Methodist Episcopal Church erected its first church building on West Fourth Street across from Main Library - becoming one of numerous churches dottingMuscatel's landscape over the ensuing years including First Baptist Church (founded 1893), Lutheran religion's "(later) Evangelical Lutheran Synod Congregational Church", South Presbyterian Churches' Ladies Auxiliary Zion Orphanage (established 1913), Independent Order of Odd Fellows' Lodge No 1 (formed 1917), Reformed Dutch Episcopal Church (later United Reformed Churches) - among many others... DowntownMuscatoin quickly became an important commercial center for both farmers/ ranchers operating their own herds/flocks along with local merchants catering to various needs such as groceries/diner supplies etc., as well as artists who used downtown storefronts or rented space inside local hotels for exhibitions or private functions... By 1950 there were six businesses open inside downtown muscatel limits alone: three banks with branches throughout town plus two grocery stores & one hardware store; four restaurants including three small cafes & one large steakhouse; five news agencies clustering around EB Hutton Building on First St SW cornering Main & Broadway blocks east of downtown MUSCATINE had become not only an important cultural center but also a thriving business district with more than fifty residents employed full-time within city limits... Overhead signs proclaiming "MUSCATINE – THE BUSINESS DISTRICT" adorned most storefronts during this time period..... One could say that DowntownMuscotine has been continuously experiencing growth since its inception nearly sixty years ago!

Muscatelli, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was awarded the Medal of Honor. The first European to visit Muscatine was Jacques Marquette in 1679. In 1838, Major General George Armstrong Custer Battlefield National Monument was established here in honor of his final battle with Sioux warriors at Little Bighorn on July 25th, 1876. Many people from Muscatine came to work on the Great Western Railroad during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The town's most famous resident may be Prentice Mulford who founded Mulford Paper Company here in 1904 and played an important role in establishing American paper industry as we know it today.
