The Army in Muscatine, IA has a rich history dating back to 1846. The town was founded by General James K. Polk in 1847 as the site of a new military post called Fort Wayne. The first post was destroyed by a fire in 1849, and it wasn't until 1851 that the fort was rebuilt and renamed Fort Dodge. The city of Muscatine grew up around the fort and its garrison, which remained an important military presence until the late 1800s. In 1862, Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant crossed the Iowa River and moved into Iowa Territory. As part of this campaign, General Dodge's army fought at Cedar Rapids and other key battles between Union and Confederate forces. In 1865, after the war ended, Dodge's army was mustered out of service at Ft. Dodge and returned toMuscatine. There he served as mayor from 1865-1867 before becoming Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of war in 1870-1871. He again served as mayor from 1875-1877 before retiring from politics completely in 1886. In 1898, Admiral Dewey decided to move his navy's flagship—the USS Constitution—from Newport News,VA to Muscatine for fear it would be lost forever if ever captured by Spanish forces during Operation Puerto Rico (see Battle of Manila Bay). Commodore George Dewey ordered all naval vessels except the USS Constitution to anchor off shore near Muscatine so that they could be unloaded without being seen by enemy sailors or planes overhead during exercises known as "Blockade run." On July 24th 1898, just days before sea hostilities began with Spain over Puerto Rico, Commodore Dewey anchored his ships off shore while his fleet sailed into open water two miles away on Lake Erie for maneuvers known as "Demonstration Run." On July 25th 1898 gunfire started aboard Spanish warships located about three miles offshore when Blockade run exercises were completed successfully without being seen by either side! Admiral Dewey immediately ordered his squadron back into port where they remained for several days practicing convoy formation while Rear Admiral John Jinks led an amphibious landing operation designed to capture Pensacola Beach on Cuba's southern coast using destroyers accompanied by ferries loaded with troops and supplies ashore; however no landings occurred due to bad weather conditions which kept most ships moored offshore for five days! Finally relieved by Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter who landed Marines at Pensacola Beach on August 2nd 1998 – almost one century after their original attempted landing!

Muscatine, Iowa is a city in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines–Urbandale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Muscatine was established on December 15, 1868. The city was founded in 1865 by John Hodge and James Gorman as a small community near the current site of Washington University in St Louis. In 1869, the two men purchased 8 acres (3 ha) of land on which they built a log cabin and named their new town Muscatine after their hometown of Mucatine, Scotland. On May 4, 1870, the railroad arrived and changed Muscatine from a small village to an incorporated town with a population of 509 persons. The American Civil War began in 1861 and ended with General Ulysses S. Grant’s victory at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865. After the war ended, many Union veterans returned home and started new settlements throughout Iowa; among these were Muscatine residents George Dickson and his son John Dickson who reopened the store that had been closed during the war years near downtown Muscatine. The business thrived until it was destroyed by fire in 1881: an event that left devastation behind as entire blocks were lost including most of downtown streetcars which ran down State Street to pick up passengers at First National Bank Building pausing only long enough for them to enter Beech-Woodruff restaurant before continuing down State Street again to terminate at Capitol Avenue). In 1922, a local group led by future Mayor Bob Kapp formed what became known as "Muscatine Civic Club" to support local civic improvements such as building schools or erecting public buildings; over time this club evolved into what is now known as "the City Council". For many years following World War II there were no major economic development opportunities until several businesses opened up around downtown including Kapp's Department Store followed by other stores during the late 1990s/early 2000s when newly renovated retail space became available along State Street between Third and Fourth Avenues (later renamed Clinton Avenue). The Muscatine community was founded in 1854 by Danish immigrants, Ole and Emma Christensen. The town was named after the Muscatine River, which they located on their farm. The Christensen family operated a grocery store and post office until 1907. In 1922, the Muscatine School District was formed, and the first school opened in 1923. By 1948, the population of Muscatine had grown to over 1,000 people. In 1951, the first church in Muscatine opened its doors. In 1957, a dam across the river allowed for more flood control and development around town; this led to an increase in business for the Christensen family as developers began to come to town looking for water rights. By 1970, there were over 20 businesses in town with a population of over 2200 people. In 1984, construction started on what would be eventually known as Civic Center Drive; this led to increased business at local restaurants and businesses along Civic Center Drive as residents started using the new drive-through window system at local merchants along that stretch of road. Today, many of these businesses still exist and are used by locals and tourists alike during various events throughout the year.
