The first coffee house in Mason City was opened by the brothers Isaac and Jacob Backus in 1855. The business continued to be run by the Backus family until 1892 when it was acquired by John Beale. Beale ran the business for fourteen years before selling it to H.H. Watkins in 1903. Watkins ran the business until his death in 1916. In 1933, Harry Fenton purchased the business from Watkins’ widow and began operation as a small-scale roaster and sold coffee through local stores. In 1951, Fenton merged with Eldridge Coffee Company and became Eldridge-Fenton Coffee Company Ltd. The company continued to operate as a small-scale roaster until 1986 when it merged with Kruger Coffee Company Incorporated and became Kruger Coffee Corporation Ltd..

Mason City, Iowa is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Iowa. It is bordered by Waterloo to the north, Douglas County to the east, and Clinton County to the south. The population of Mason City was 5,281 as of 2010. The first settler in what is now Mason City was John Scudder in 1836. He built a log cabin on a hill near present-day downtown. The first school in what is now Mason City was opened in 1838 by Methodist missionaries under the name "Elderscroft." In 1840, Jonas Saylor set up a store and post office at what is now Main Street and First Avenue. In 1846, James Crouse established an hotel called The Palace which served as the city's mainstay until it burned down in 1906. In 1860, John Pappan founded the Masonic Lodge No. 3 (Masons) here in Mason City with nine members. On February 3rd of that year, he met with other business owners and elected David Harshaw as his first Grand Master for this lodge's new Territory No. 1 section within Clinton County - effective from then on all Masons operating within this newly formed county belonged to this Lodge/Lodge No. 3 - thereby solidifying its status as one of Iowa's oldest masonic organizations still extant today! A second Masonic Lodge was organized on October 15th 1861 under his leadership with thirteen members! This new Lodge met at Mr.'s Hotel before moving into its own building on 10th street northeast corner Washington Ave., just across from today's Department Store! Membership growth continued apace here through 1862 when three more Lodges were chartered: #1st (Central Missouri Missouri), #2nd (Arkansas), & #3rd (Iowa). Soon thereafter there were also lodges angling for space inside “The Capitol” where Des Moines' first opera house had been erected only two years earlier! Of course such activity did nothing but foster brotherly love between these various Masons who constituted themselves into numerous benevolent societies throughout their many decades together herein...thus perpetuating our rich history while enjoying some much needed peace & quiet during these often dramatic times ;)
Mason City was founded in 1847 by Simon Mason. The city was named for General James Mason, who led the United States during the Mexican-American War. The city was incorporated in 1851. In 1902, the Iowa State Legislature designated Mason City as a county seat of Polk County. In 1907, the population of Mason City reached 100,000 people. The city experienced significant growth in the 1960s and 1970s, with an increase in employment and population. However, recent economic conditions have caused decreases in both employment and population.
