It is one of the oldest military organizations in the United States and its members have fought in every major war between 1871 and 1945. Today, the Iowa Army National Guard operates more than 350 units throughout the state of Iowa. These units are tasked with providing basic military services to citizens of Iowa as well as support operations within the state’s borders. Mason City is a small city located in Johnson County, Iowa. The population was 9,154 at the 2010 census. Mason City is the county seat of Johnson County and is also home to the main campus of Iowa State University. Mason City was founded on December 21, 1852 by Captain John Mason and his wife Anna. The town was named for General James H. Mason who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from Illinois. The first post office in the town was established on December 22, 1852. In 1854, Mason City became an act of the United States Congress for military purposes as a site for an armory and ammunition depot needed to support American troops during the Mexican-American War. The Depot functioned until 1861 when it closed due to financial problems brought on by the war effort. In 1865, local farmers started a flour mill which continued operation until 1907 when it burned down due to lack of maintenance or investment by its operators. During that time period, other businesses including lumberyards and machine shops opened up in what is now downtown Mason City with some lasting into the 20th century including Jardine Companies Paper Mill which still stands today and produces paper products such as checkers and packaging materials for grocery stores; Hawkeye Tire & Rubber Co.; First National Bank (now First Midwest Bank); Masonic Temple; Masonic Lodge No.-2 (now known as "The United Methodist Church"); Two Sisters Bakery which served coffee throughout most of their history before moving across Ia Street to 505 W 100th St.; Brown’s Hardware Co.; Sears Roebuck & Company; Union Carbide Company; Bob’s Big Boy Store; Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery; Macdonald's Restaurant chain all opened up shop here over time making this one of America's most vibrant cities during its early years!
