In 1875, a coffee house called the National Coffee House was opened in downtown Marshalltown. In 1907, the Second National Coffee House was founded in downtown Marshalltown. The First National Coffee House closed in 1966. In 1971, the Third National Coffee House was opened in downtownMarshalltown and is still open today.

The first Europeans to visit Marshtown were French traders and missionaries who traveled through the area in 1692. The town was founded by James Marshall, a surveyor for the Indian trade, on July 12, 1854. It was named for General John A. Marshall who served as United States Secretary of War from 1861-1865 and as commander of Fort Madison on Lake Michigan. In 1905, Marshaltown became one of four cities merged into Des Moines with a population of 102,000 people. In 2000, it lost its charter status and became an unincorporated community again under the name “Marshalltown” due to lack of support from city leaders. However, it has maintained its downtown core while continuing to serve as an economic center for rural areas around it. Marshalltown is located at (41°24′30″N 97°28′00″W). According to the 2010 census, its total area is , all land. As of the census[2] OFC2010,[3] there were 17,711 people living in 3333 housing units; 42% were owner-occupied and 58% were occupied by renters; 1% had no occupation; 0% reported being homeless; and 9% reported being below poverty line (including 8% with no income). Hispanic or Latino residents made up 11%, non-Hispanic Whites made up 83%, Asians accounted for 2%.

The first post office in Marshalltown was established on December 5, 1851, and was called New Salem. The present town name evolved from the original decision to name it after General Ulysses S. Grant because of his influence on the community during its early years. Marshalltown's history can be traced back to 1851 when William C. Marshall purchased 320 acres (120 ha) of land southeast of Waterloo on the Illinois River for $1,000 dollars with the intent of founding a town there. He named his new community Marshallstown after General Ulysses S. Grant who had been instrumental in helping him finance his explorations into what is now Iowa Territory during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Although Marshallstown initially lacked any amenities such as schools or churches, it quickly began to grow due to its location near major transportation hubs and its easy access to markets such as Waterloo and Council Bluffs which made it an ideal place to start a small business or farm! In fact, within just a few years of its establishment, Marshtown had become one of the most popular towns in Iowa with residents coming from all over to enjoy its unique culture and environment! Today, Marshtown remains an active commercial center with businesses including grocery stores, restaurants, medical offices and more!
