Marshalltown is a town in and the county seat of Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines metropolitan area. The townsite was founded on November 15, 1859 by General James A. Marshall and his men as a result of the land lottery conducted in that year to purchase 640 acres (240 hectares) in what is now northwest Marshall County. The first post office in Marshalltown was established on March 3, 1860. The name "Marshallstown" was chosen from General James A. Marshall's three sons who all bore their father's initials: JAMA for John A., GEMA for George E., and AMR for Andrew M., making him one of only six people to have both initials given to them (the others being Ulysses S. Grant, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Orville Wright). In 1870, $5 per acre (0.50 pesos per kilometer) were offered for government land west of Cedar Rapids in what is now northeast Marshall County; 462 lots were sold and construction began on the Townsite Railway which connected downtown with the new town site. On October 24th 1880 voters approved a local ordinance authorizing incorporation as a city – becoming the third city in Iowa after Cedar Rapids and Dubuque – under the name “Marshalltown” although it would not become an official municipality until 1905 when it annexed parts of neighboring Newton Grove On January 1st 1907 Marshaltown united with Newton Grove to form an enlarged Stillwater Township which included much of east-central Marshfield The population increased rapidly during World War II due to mobilization efforts; by 1946 there were 10 businesses in town employing over 50 people including seven banks On July 16th 1951 Marshalstown became an unincorporated community once again following statehood ceremonies presided over by Governor Clyde Davenport In early 2017 consolidation proposals backed by Mayor Tim Boland led to the closure of several businesses within town limits including two gas stations diesel pumps along with most home sales while also eliminating many services such as water & electricity meters within those boundaries
