Marshalltown, Iowa is a city in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 9,873 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Missouri River and is the county seat of Marshall County. The post office was established in 1852 and has been in operation since 1857. The first settler in what is now Marshalltown was Wm. Hinton who arrived July 1, 1830 from Holland, Pennsylvania with his family. He built a log cabin on the north side of the river where he later died. A post office called Hintonville was established in 1852, and remained in operation until 1861 when it became known as Marshalltown. The first school in town was opened by Miss Mary Hunt on October 25th, 1859. In 1860, a sawmill began operations and soon produced lumber which led to town growth; two stores were built within a year of each other and another store was added in 1865; four homes were erected between 1870-1872; and an hotel opened its doors for business on December 15th, 1874. By 1880-1881 there were twenty two businesses operating within town limits! In 1886 three new stores were built: one east of Main Street (now First Avenue), one north of Main Street (now State Route 7), and one west of First Avenue (now Webster Road). Marshaltown grew rapidly during this time but experienced rapid decline beginning around 1920 due to heavy rural migration to larger cities during that decade Plus numerous strikes throughout those years caused significant damage to local commerce including loss of jobs & destroyed businesses….the biggest blow came when construction workers went out on strike at the nearby Pabst brewery on November 8th 1923 resulting in $3 million worth damage to property & employment! In 1930-1931 only five businesses existed within town limits while all but one had closed by 1933! Marshaltown’s fortunes improved somewhat starting around 1940 when several new businesses started up such as the KFC restaurant which reopened after being closed for eighteen months; gas stations began opening up throughout town selling gasoline & other supplies; however during World War II much heavier military production took place making many small towns like Marshtown heavily dependent upon government support which ultimately led to their decline…..By 1960 only six businesses still operated within town limits while all but two had closed by 1970! With declining populations& economic dependencylargely due to growing Interstate Highway traffic& urban development outside of Marshtown over the past few decades little hope exists that any major reversals will occur anytime soon……Today Marshalstown remains primarily an agricultural community with most residents working farms or ranches…..
Marshtown was founded in 1847 by James Marshall and his wife Rachel. The town became a city in 1907.
