A number of major businesses have been headquartered here since they were founded – among them are Abbott Laboratories (1927), Monsanto Co.(1957), KFC (1987), Peet's Coffee(1989), Ames Rubber Company (1991) – all during or after years when other parts of Iowa experienced significant economic growth due to industrialization or new technology arrivals such as Ford Motor Company (1913). Marshalltown is a small town located in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Orlando Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European tosight what is now Marshalltown was a French trader, Pierre-Jacques Marquette, on November 6, 1779 during his journey from Illinois to St. Louis. He named it after James Marshall who had led an expedition in 1780 across the Great Lakes. The first residents of Marshallstown were those who founded the town in 1836 when they relocated from Council Bluffs, Iowa following the 1834 Sand Creek Massacre which left six people dead and dozens wounded in what is now eastern Iowa. The town of Marshalltown grew rapidly due to its location on the east bank of the Missouri River where goods could be shipped upstream for processing into finished products such as clothing and shoes. Many farmers established businesses around this time including tanneries (later converted into shoe stores), flour mills and other commerce that continues today as downtownMarshalltown businesses include Trolley Carpet & Flooring Store, Oneida Furniture store and many more! In 1886 tworought about by a flood that swept through central Iowa destroyed most of the railroad infrastructure in that area; however, within five years new railways had been built ferrying goods between Des Moines and Omaha making Marshfield one of these towns! Today much of downtown Marshaltown still retains some evidence from those early days including original locomotive cabins used by trains arriving at Terminal Station! Marshalltown was founded in 1847 by Colonel John Marshall and his wife, Sarah. The town grew quickly due to its location at the junction of two major trails, the sometimes-dangerous Missouri River Trail and the new Santa Fe Trail.
