Marshalltown is home to two factories that produce artisan coffee: The First National Coffee Company and The Second National Coffee Company. These two factories are responsible for making most of the coffee used in central and western Iowa. The first National Coffee Company was founded in 1868 by John Marshall and Samuel Morse. It was one of the earliest companies to sell roasted coffee. The company later became known as The First National Coffee Corporation. The Second National Coffee Company was founded in 1911 by Milton Jaffe and Harry Schwartzman. It was also one of the earliest companies to produce roasted coffee. The company later became known as The Second American Coffee Corporation. In 1914, Milton Jaffe bought out his brother-in-law Harry Schwartzman’s share in the Second American Coffee Corporation for $1 million dollars. This made him the sole owner of both companies. From then on, Milton Jaffe named his companies “First American Coffee Corporation” and “Second American Coffee Corporation” (although these still use different branding). These two companies were responsible for making most of the coffee used in central and western Iowa during their time period; however, they did not export any coffee to other countries like many other small businesses did at this time (except maybe Europe).
