Marshalltown, IA is a city located in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. The population was 6,522 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The first settlement in what is now Marshalltown was made on the site of present-day figures 8 and 9 on December 12th, 1853 by Capt. James W. Caldwell and his party while on their way to explore new land east of Iowa City. The town site they selected was located on the banks of the Mississippi River just south of what is now downtown Marshalltown. A ferry crosses over the river near present-day figure 10 and 11 to connect with early settlers living along both sides of the river. The town's name comes from General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry unit which fought in western India during World War I. Upon its return from that war in 1919, General Custer donated land including part of today's downtown to make up for any damage he may have inflicted during that conflict. In 1902, when Marshfield became a city Limits Municipality within convenient driving distance for many farmers and others who lived close by for agricultural purposes (the same boundaries as present day Marshalltown), much discussion took place about annexingMarshalltown but no annexation occurred until 1907 when Mayor J F Byrnes recommended it be done because “it would be better than anything else we could think” He also stated that “It would be only fair to annex all those people who live within easy reach” Prior to this time there were few things connecting rural areas with cities other than transportation connections such as goods trains or stagecoaches which generally traveled one way only so residents could go back home after picking up goods at a local store or depot

By 1907, the population had grown to one thousand five hundred residents. The history of Marshalltown begins with its founding as a small farming community by General George Washington Smith and his family. The general purchased land in what is now Marshalltown from the Sac and Fox Indians in 1847. At that time, the area was sparsely populated and consisted only of Aipa Creek Valley along with some scattered farms. The original store building was erected on the corner of Center and State Streets within one year of its opening. Marshallstown quickly became an important center for local commerce due to its location close to major railroads and highways. In addition to its role as a retail center, Marshallstown also served as a key military stop during World War II due to its positioning at the junction of several routes important for troop movement across Iowa Territory. In 1957, when Cedar Rapids became my largest city after being amalgamated from two other towns, Marshalltown saw an increased number of visitors because it became part of Cedar Rapids’s entertainment district becoming known as "The City Park". In recent years, though it has experienced occasional growth due to annexations from neighboring cities or counties, Marshalltown has remained relatively stable overall despite experiencing various natural disasters over the past few decades including flash flooding in 2000 which damaged many homes but no injuries were reported; Hurricane Katrina which destroyed most businesses within blocks of I-80; and tornado damage in 2011 which resulted in serious loss both physically and emotionally among those who lived in or near the town square that day. Despite these challenges, however, Marshalls have always been determined to keep their sense of humor while living through difficult times - something that can be seen throughout much of their history even during some tough times like this current economic slump (which they have not yet suffered).
