The town was founded in 1854 by General John Marshall and his brother-in-law, Senator Prentiss. Marshallstown began as a small frontier settlement named "New Salem" on the east side of what is now Dent County. In 1854, General John Marshall and his brother-in-law, Senator Prentiss arrived in Marshalltown with their families to start a new life on the frontier. The first buildings were built around an outhouse which became the town hall. New Salem grew quickly and by 1860 there were over 200 residents living in what is now Marshalltown. In 1869, Hannibal School District No. 2 merged with other school districts to form Decatur School District No.. 3 which then merged with Washburn School District No.. 4 to form Decatur–Marshalltown School District No.. 1 (later called Decatur–Hawkeye Schools). In 1893, Marshallstown incorporated as a city under the name of "Marshallstown." In 1907 it changed its name back to "Dent County". The economy of Marshaltown has been largely based on agriculture since it was founded over 100 years ago. Today, much of the town's economic activity revolves around services such as health care and education for local students and businesses including four elementary schools and two high schools that serve the entire community; Aschbacher Technical High School; FirstMerit College; and Lighthouse Christian Academy which opened in Fall 2006

Through much of its history, Marshalltown has been considered one of the most Republican bastions in central Iowa. At times this has come as a result of its size or location - adjacent to Des Moines - but also because many prominent local citizens have been involved in politics or business throughout their careers. In recent years however there has been increasing evidence that Marshalltown may be losing its Republican edge; for example, only 21% of residents reported themselves as Democratic in 2000 while 47% identified themselves as Republicans. Despite this trend however, some residents see aspects of their community that make it unique enough to keep them registered with either party; such as its close proximity to major cities like Des Moines or Chicago.
