The history of the present-day Marion Police Department goes back to 1871. The town of Marion was founded in 1851 by George W. Brown and his wife, Eliza. The police department was established on July 1, 1871, as a result of the efforts of then-Mayor James H. Clarke and Sheriff A.F. Caldwell. In 1915, the first female officer was hired, and in 1925, the first machine guns were procured for the department. The department has since grown to include over 100 officers who serve throughout Marion County and all six rural towns within its jurisdiction.
Marion is a small town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Marion were the Sioux and Potawatomi Indians. They started farming in 1847. The first post office was established in Marion in 1853. In 1871, a train ran through Marion and other towns on their way to Cedar Rapids, Iowa due to its importance as a stop on the Great Western Railroad. A railroad depot was built at present-day Midvale in 1902 and it served as the town's main social gathering place until it burned down in 1941. The first store was founded by Wm Haines in 1903 and it closed its doors in 1922 because of lack of customers. In 1907, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Peltier settled near present-day Midvale and opened a grocery store called "Peltier's". It was one of the few stores open during World War I because grain prices were high that year; however, it closed within two years due to economic reasons unrelated to war (the war had no impact on food production). After World War I, there were several schools: an elementary school (1893), a middle school (1910), and High School (1915). However, they all shut down within 5 years because of budget cuts caused by prohibitionism legislation then being passed by Congress which limited alcohol sales throughout most of America including Iowa The first car dealership opened up shop here circa 1934 when J J Weiland leased space from his father-in-law Harry Smith who operated an agricultural equipment company out of his home until he died suddenly just prior to opening day! Morris Motorsports Incorporated has been located here continuously since 1936 when Fred Weiland purchased John’s old garage/shop building at 1400 S Main Street from his father-in-law for $1,500 cash! Fred soon established himself as one of local “Big Bertha” motoring enthusiasts with over 100 street or track cars running frequently throughout much of northwest Iowa – often challenging top endurance drivers from other states such as Ohio interstate highways where speeds exceeding 25 MPH were common back then! rustbucket Racing Company also enjoyed some success early on thru Dave Kolodziejewski driving many #24 entry cars for Eastern Illinois Speedway wining 4 races during 1946 season Also participation increasing Lou Nadelman entered quite alot for various events throughout area starting with 3rd Annual Oldsmobile Open Meeting held Sept 5th 1946 at OSUMain Campus….event became more popular drew large crowds everywhere…..From these beginnings right up til today our Club has grown rapidly enjoying numerous awards along side numerous memberships across state etc……We would like To Thank Our Sponsors Who have supported us abundantly…………..Some fond memories from our early days include regular attendance at various meets sponsored by merchant banks/federal reserve bank presidents…and special occasions such as black tie dinner dances given annually at UIUC Mansfield Campus…..Many thanks go out especially to our talented Secretary & Treasurer who take care Inventory records mailed out each month……..

The story of Marion, Iowa began in 1854 when a group of Mormons set out from Nauvoo, Illinois, with the hope of finding a new home. They arrived in what is now Marion County, Iowa, and built a small community called Fort Des Moines. It was here that they ran into trouble with the local Native American tribe. The Mormons were forced to leave their community and then spent the winter living on an Indian reservation. In Spring 1855 they moved back to Marion County and started anew. This time they decided to plant crops and build up their community as a way of life for themselves and their children. They named their new town after one of their own members-Marion Hyrum Smith Jr., who had died earlier that year at the age of 36 years old. In 1861 Mormon settlers in western Iowa killed four Indians during an attack on the village of Crawfordville. The Sioux had been raiding these settlements for some time and this particular incident provoked them into open warfare against the Mormons. The violence continued until 1865 when Brigham Young ordered all Mormon settlers out of western Iowa due to fears that Lakota Sioux were planning another assault on our villages. From 1865 until his death in 1901 Marion's mayor was John Atherton (1853-1937). He was also its first postmaster general; he served from 1907-11 when it merged with neighboring cities Danville and Waterloo under one office structure which would last until 1935 when separate offices were again combined under one name - Omaha City Hall! Atherton founded both American Legion Posts #2 (now part of Green Bay) and #3 in 1911 which served as barracks for troops needed during World War I before being disbanded following hostilities ended; later becoming home to Green Bay Packers football players training camp between 1934-35! In 1941 local WWII veteran Arthur Kapp (1914-2006) organized 9th Infantry Battalion while stationed at Topeka Army Ammunition Plant east side of city limits; serving full time from 1941 until his discharge early 1945 just prior to US entered European war! Afterward he lived near Topeka annexation boundary line before moving back near city limits about 1950s first established by Topeka officials as 'new' town name - Arlington Heights! Founder/director emeritus Don Davenport (1920-) reminisced: "Kapp must have liked topeka because he donated land near where Arlington Heights now stands"
